Tutu Tuesday in Montreal, Quebec: A Dance of Style and Whimsy

Hey there, fellow dance lovers! It's your girl, Chloe here, bringing you a little dose of fashion inspiration straight from the heart of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, where I’m surrounded by the breathtaking architecture, charming cafes, and—most importantly—the amazing energy of the Canadian ballet scene. Today is all about the graceful, iconic garment that never goes out of style, the pièce de résistance of every ballerina's wardrobe—the Tutu. And it's a Tuesday, so it's got to be #tututuesday!

Today, I took a stroll through the beautiful Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery in Montreal. You might think that's an odd choice for a fashion post, but bear with me! This cemetery, with its majestic mausoleums, weeping willows, and peaceful ambiance, is just as evocative and artistic as any fashion runway. In a way, it felt like the ultimate setting to explore the various ways the tutu has been reinterpreted throughout history.

From the delicate, romantic Romantic tutu (think ethereal and airy, with layers of tulle cascading gracefully around the dancer's form) to the structured and sleek Classical tutu, and the edgy and modern Contemporary tutu (a lot less fussy, with less tulle, often seen in more angular and fluid lines) to even the more practical, minimalist practice tutus used by students all over the country—this beloved ballet garment just embodies an essence of elegance and timeless grace.

I had to snap some shots among these historical and iconic structures. I mean, it’s Montreal. The beauty of it all! It truly resonated with me.

Here are some things I observed, with my fashionable dancer's eye, to inspire you, from a #tututuesday perspective:

  • The Romanticism of the Romantic Tutu, in its voluminous skirts, is all about femininity and the flow of movement, perfect for the elegant marble sculptures and arches of the mausoleums. Just imagine the ethereal silhouettes in a ballet performance, with the fabric rippling with each gesture and spin—like poetry in motion! The lightness of this type of tutu would float effortlessly in a ballet production or performance that demanded a sense of otherworldly charm.
  • Then there's the Classic tutu with its perfectly sculpted and tightly-fitted bodice—classic and beautiful— a stark contrast against the somber background. A beautiful juxtaposition to all that somberness, it embodies grace, control, and precision—just like a delicate and meticulously crafted sculpture. Just thinking about the grand jetés and the swift turns it enables, and its streamlined lines in a performance….
  • But of course, we can’t forget the power of the Modern Tutu, for the way it redefines what we think of as ballet fashion. Think sleek, structured, and versatile. Imagine it in an urban setting, with sleek architectural lines, as if a ballet performance were being staged within the very heart of Montreal's urban landscape. Its simple yet powerful silhouette represents the modern ballerina—not afraid to embrace individuality, challenging norms and embracing artistic expression. It can take many shapes and forms, and doesn't have to be attached to any single idea, so it makes sense that a cemetery can serve as a neutral backdrop for this type of dancewear.
  • And speaking of contemporary ballet, I really adore that this style allows for so much freedom. It gives the dancer a chance to fully express her individuality in a modern and personal style. In Canada, ballet is undergoing a thrilling evolution—embracing new themes, artistic explorations, and new interpretations of classic pieces. These adaptations give us a peek at the boundless creativity of ballet as it continues to develop and push boundaries.

So here's to #tututuesday and all its incredible styles— celebrating the magic of ballet. Even if we’re in Montreal, at the Cemetery! #tututuesday always brings an ethereal grace and beautiful spirit to every ballet dancer's day, anywhere, and Canada’s vibrant and exciting ballet scene shows that every type of ballerina can find their inspiration anywhere—from a bustling city centre to the peaceful backdrop of a cemetery.
