Tutu Tuesday in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador: A Celebration of Whimsy and Grace #tututuesday

Hey everyone, it's your girl, Chloe, back with another installment of "Tutu Tuesday"! Today, we're heading east, way east, to the charming city of St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. I've been meaning to get to this beautiful province for ages, and let me tell you, it's as enchanting as I imagined.

For this week's #tututuesday, I decided to switch things up a bit and explore the local ballet scene. After all, ballet is universal – its beauty and artistry transcend borders and cultures. And trust me, the St. John's dance scene is vibrant and full of talent.

Now, I know what you're thinking: "Ballet in Newfoundland? What kind of tutus do they even wear there?" Well, friends, let me tell you, Newfoundland dancers definitely don't shy away from classic styles, like the traditional **Romantic tutu**, with its billowing tiers of tulle, or the **Classical tutu**, featuring a rigid, perfectly sculpted line. But they're also known for experimenting with more contemporary and modern styles. Think **pancake tutus** - short, airy and light as a feather, or even the dramatic **layered tutu**, creating a kind of "waterfall effect" as the dancer twirls.

I was fortunate enough to attend a rehearsal for the "The Nutcracker," at the **Arts and Culture Centre** in downtown St. John's. It was magical! Seeing the dancers, young and old, bring the classic tale to life was inspiring, and they were flaunting a beautiful range of tutu styles – from those classic romantic ones to modern designs featuring layers of bold colour. It was like a feast for the eyes!

But it wasn't just the performances and the costumes that caught my eye; the community aspect was heartwarming, too. From the moment I stepped into the studio, I was struck by the strong sense of camaraderie, the passion, and the sheer love of dance. You can't find this kind of passion just anywhere, and it was such a refreshing change from the bustling city life.

So, if you ever find yourself in St. John's, Newfoundland, make sure to check out the local ballet scene! It's more than just a performance, it's an experience. It's a chance to lose yourself in the magic of dance, to witness the creativity and talent of local artists, and to experience the heart and soul of this vibrant community.

And remember, folks, #tututuesday is not just about fashion, it's about celebrating the joy and spirit of dance everywhere.

Until next time, keep on dancing! 💃

Here are a few highlights from my St. John's #tututuesday:

  • Charming dancers: I was captivated by the dancers’ joy and passion; they really embraced every moment of the performance. They radiated such an infectious energy, it was truly a joy to watch them.
  • The Nutcracker: There's something special about watching a classic like “The Nutcracker” come to life in a new environment. The familiar music, costumes, and characters were brought to life with a local flavour, and it made the story even more captivating.
  • A vibrant scene: St. John's has a thriving arts community. From community dance classes to professional troupes, the passion for dance was tangible, creating a warm and welcoming environment.
  • Don’t forget the cod! No trip to Newfoundland is complete without trying their legendary fish and chips, and this time around, I treated myself to a massive plateful (extra cod, please!). So, if you happen to visit the St. John's arts scene, make sure to fuel up on cod, the staple dish, before and after enjoying the show! It’s a must-try.
  • Unique styles: St. John's ballet scene showcases both classic and modern styles of dance and a stunning array of tutus, giving audiences an incredible visual treat.
  • Friendly locals: The warm and welcoming atmosphere of St. John's was so endearing. People were eager to talk to me, answer my questions, and share their own passion for ballet, making me feel right at home.
