Tutu Tuesday in Battle River No. 438, Saskatchewan, Canada #tututuesday

Hey fellow dance lovers! It's your girl, Sasha, back with another installment of Tutu Tuesday! This week, I'm taking my twirls out to the prairie plains of Battle River No. 438, Saskatchewan, Canada. A place where the wind whips through the fields of golden wheat, and the stars shine brighter than anywhere else I've ever seen. But hold up, you think the ballet scene out here is all cornfields and quiet evenings? Think again, my friends!

It's funny, I was on the phone with my grandmother yesterday. We were talking about Tutu Tuesday (because, what else is there to talk about?) and she was reminiscing about when she used to watch us dance at the little theatre in town. That got me thinking – did you know the history of ballet in Canada goes way back? Canada's national ballet company, The National Ballet of Canada, is only 68 years old! You know, you could literally call it a "baby" in the world of ballet. It turns out, there were a ton of ballet schools, smaller companies, and performance groups popping up in Canadian cities long before that. And even before our official National Ballet was born, some brilliant Canadian dancers were leaving home to pursue careers in big-city ballet companies down in the USA and Europe. This country has such a rich dance heritage, it blows my mind!

So, this week, I'm not just wearing my tutu to show off (although let's be real, that's a big part of it). I'm rocking my classic romantic tutu with a touch of Canadian flair! Think soft pink silk, a sprinkle of glittering rhinestones, and enough tulle to create a swirling cloud. This bad boy is as elegant and airy as the Canadian prairies. My favorite thing about a romantic tutu is the way the tulle just catches the light, kind of like how the Canadian prairies sparkle when they are lit up by the Northern Lights.

Speaking of my favorite things, did I mention the pointe shoes? I know, I know, it sounds like an ode to a pair of slippers. But let me tell you, dancing in pointe shoes, in my opinion, is the only way to truly appreciate the precision, the strength, and the pure art of ballet. And they're even more magical when they’re in the air at a studio where all you can hear is the whispering of the wind outside. I’m also loving this sparkly blue fabric around the waistband of the tutu. It feels like a little nod to Saskatchewan's breathtaking lakes, all that beautiful aqua blue that sparkles like the Canadian sky.

Let’s get real. It isn't always easy, you know. Sometimes the weather isn't cooperating, or finding time to train can feel like an Olympic sport. There have definitely been times I have had to take breaks. Maybe you know what I’m talking about if you've ever felt like dancing with a sore body. Or tried to dance when you've been cramming for finals. We all have moments like that! But I keep dancing, you guys! The best feeling ever? Being out there on stage, lost in the music, giving everything I’ve got. I love what I do, and that makes it so much easier.

I know some of you are in different stages of your own dance journeys, maybe you’re in ballet, jazz, contemporary… or whatever your style is! I want to see all your fabulous looks on social media this week! Just hashtag #tututuesday so we can all check out each other's style!

For me, it’s a simple, almost innocent way to remind myself and everyone who looks at it about the passion for dance and what it really means.

If you're in the Battle River No. 438 area, keep your eyes peeled! You might just catch a glimpse of my Tutu Tuesday on the stage in the local community theatre, or at the studio during a special showcase. And who knows, maybe I’ll even bring the show to your town soon.

Love, Sasha

Some of my Favorite Tutu Styles

  • Romantic Tutu: (what I'm wearing!) These tutus are made with lots of soft layers of tulle and typically have a delicate, feminine feel.
  • Classical Tutu: Known for its short, stiff skirt, the classical tutu creates a sharp, geometric silhouette. I love how this style makes dancers look like ballerinas straight out of the 19th century.
  • Modern Tutu: A much more contemporary and edgy version of the tutu! I think of them as the free spirit, super versatile kind of tutus that don't always have tulle and sometimes go even past the knees. This style is always changing.
