Tutu Tuesday in Plaster Rock, New Brunswick: A Ballet Blogger's Delight
As a Canadian ballerina living and breathing the art form, I am always on the lookout for ways to share my passion and spread the joy of dance. One of my favourite things to do is to see people embracing the elegance and artistry of ballet in unexpected ways. That’s why when I discovered #Tututuesday, I was instantly smitten! This playful social media trend encourages people to don their tutus (or anything tutu-inspired) and share their photos. I couldn't resist getting in on the action, especially when I learned it was coming to my home province of New Brunswick. So, with a twirl in my step and a big grin on my face, I decided to bring the fun to my hometown of Plaster Rock, New Brunswick!
I must confess, my fellow New Brunswickers, I was a little surprised at the initial hesitation I received. "Tutus? In Plaster Rock?" they seemed to think, eyebrows raised and eyes wide with curiosity. "But it’s such a quaint town… with the forest… and the fishing…," some mused, questioning if ballet fashion belonged in this setting.
"Tutus can be more than just a dance garment,” I told them with a chuckle, “It can be a symbol of expressing yourself. It's about joy, self-expression, and a love for art!” I'd explain that while Plaster Rock was certainly charming, why not inject a bit of ballet glamour into this community!
With a touch of my Canadian spirit and a hint of my inner ballerina, I rallied my fellow Plaster Rockers, inspiring them with stories of ballerinas from all over Canada - the elegant ballerinas of the National Ballet of Canada in Toronto, the expressive dancers of the Alberta Ballet in Calgary, the passionate souls of Les Grands Ballets Canadiens in Montreal… I shared how these ballet giants have taken on new challenges, inspired different cultures, and moved the hearts of audiences with the grace and energy of their tutus. With my little ballet pep talk, I reminded the locals how impactful tutus can be, highlighting their historical significance and their evolution into different styles – from the traditional Romantic tutu (think big, fluffy and layered with tulle) to the more modern, shorter, contemporary tutu designs with their minimalist cuts and clean lines, perfect for athleticism and artistic expression.

Taking on Tutu Tuesday
And let me tell you, Plaster Rock embraced #Tututuesday with gusto! We saw everything from the classically beautiful tutu styles with fluffy layers and shimmering sequins worn by the town's elegant dancers to those with a more playful, fun approach, like a group of young girls sporting bright, colourful tutus as they ran around the park. We even had a local restaurant owner don a sparkly pink tutu for their Tuesday evening specials, their creativity leaving everyone amazed and craving their unique "Tutu Tuesday" treats.
Here were a few things I observed:
* "You are not just limited to traditional ballet tutu styles," I told them. We had those “The Greatest Showman” inspired hoop skirts and poofy ballet-esque tutus adorned with glittering gems. They were simply divine! It was lovely to see the town embrace the spirit of the trend.
* The sense of community was a heartwarming sight to behold. Our Plaster Rock seniors dressed up and did the can-can in their own rendition of #Tututuesday, sparking laughter and applause as they twirled their makeshift tutus, made with newspapers and festive streamers.
* The joy and laughter that filled the air on that day is something that will stay with me for a long time. It was magical, it was whimsical, and it truly exemplified the power of art to bring people together.
