Hey, fellow dance enthusiasts! Itâs your girl, Sarah, back with another blog post all about that sweet, sweet tutu magic! You know, thereâs just something about the way a tutu twirls that brings out the inner ballerina in all of us. And this week, Iâm diving headfirst into the world of tutus in my hometown of Oshawa, Ontario. Let's get this Tutu Tuesday party started!
So, where did this whole Tutu Tuesday obsession begin? It started with a group of us girls from the Oshawa Ballet Company. You know, the whole âgetting ready for the recitalâ vibe with matching tutus and hair buns - always a classic! Then one day, we decided that tutus were just too much fun to limit to rehearsals. That's how Tutu Tuesdays were born! Every week, weâd take a trip to our favourite coffee shop downtown, wearing our fanciest tutus (we have a collection that rivals some dance stores!), and just let our tutus twirl like thereâs no tomorrow. Honestly, we make everyone's day just by walking into the cafe, even the old grumpy guy with his double-double!
But what makes a tutu so special? Why the fascination, you ask?- Firstly, theyâre simply iconic! I mean, letâs be real - a tutu is the epitome of ballet, and even if you haven't danced a day in your life, you know what a tutu looks like.
- Then, thereâs the element of pure, unadulterated twirling! Seriously, try telling me you canât smile when a tutu gracefully floats around a ballerina. It's physics at its finest.
- But most importantly, tutus are all about self-expression. Each style, from the classic Romantic tutus to the modern, shorter tutus, tells a different story, just like the characters we bring to life onstage.
Now, letâs talk about Oshawa. Yes, Oshawa! For all those unfamiliar with my humble hometown, letâs just say that when youâre thinking ballet, Oshawa might not be the first place that comes to mind. But you'd be surprised. I've lived in Oshawa my whole life, and believe it or not, thereâs a rich dance scene brewing in this little Ontario town, from our local community ballet studios to our own version of the Canadian Grand Prix every year. We may not have a Canadian Ballet school downtown like Toronto, but we've got something even better - heart and creativity.
Here in Oshawa, tutu styles really shine. It's a beautiful blend of the traditional and the modern. The romantic tutu, you know, the classic layers of tulle that create a grand, voluminous effect? Well, we find it in many shades - ivory, black, even deep blues, always with that shimmering fabric that reflects light in ways you wouldnât believe. And let's not forget the variations - from the shorter, streamlined tutus, designed to move like lightning across the stage, to the playful tutus we use for children's ballets, decorated with colourful ribbons and fun, colourful details! Every Tutu Tuesday here in Oshawa is an exploration of what tutus can truly be.
Let's talk about Oshawaâs tutu hotspots.- First up, there's my favourite, the âTutu Emporium.â It's a hidden gem tucked away on King Street, with a huge selection of every tutu you could ever dream of - even some you hadn't thought about! And let me tell you, their prices are unreal.
- Next, we have âThe Tutu Room.â A tiny shop run by the kindest old lady you'll ever meet, this shopâs overflowing with vintage and handcrafted tutus, and let me tell you, they've got a history you can just feel when you put them on. Every Tutu Tuesday, they even offer special deals for students like me. I find my Tutu Tuesday best friends here!
- If you're looking for something really unique, check out âSew What?,â a sewing boutique with a little secret - they make tutus on commission. So if you're a little wild at heart, wanting to break the mold and try some outrageous custom creations - you gotta check this place out. Thatâs where I found my new iridescent tutu with sequin embroidery! Talk about head-turning!
Beyond the shops, Oshawa's streets have this quirky charm when it comes to tutus. From local boutiques with racks of custom tutu dresses and leggings that let you wear your inner dancer every day to vintage shops hiding those dreamy tutus you can use to complete your next performance-ready outfit, there's a little bit of magic to find in every corner!
So, join me, my lovely fellow tutu enthusiasts, and celebrate all things tutus this Tutu Tuesday in Oshawa, Ontario! Post your best twirls and strut your stuff. Let's make this the most epic Tutu Tuesday yet!
