Tutu Tuesday in Saanich, British Columbia #tututuesday Hey everyone, It’s Tuesday, which means it’s time for a little Tutu Tuesday inspiration! As a professional ballet dancer based right here in beautiful British Columbia, Canada, I live and breathe tutus. I thought it would be fun to give you all a glimpse into the world of the tutu. There’s a reason they are the icon of ballet and a symbol of artistry and grace. I have been dancing since I was 5 years old, starting with the classical tutu for my Nutcracker debut as the Sugar Plum Fairy at the age of 12, and I am a veteran of the stages across Canada. My personal favourite is the Romantic tutu – the soft layers of tulle create a gorgeous flowing movement that is mesmerizing to watch. Why Tutues are the Best? But beyond the visual appeal, there's a story behind every tutu, a dedication to artistry and the embodiment of dedication to perfection that drives every dancer and inspires them to move in new ways, with an undeniable expression of skill, stamina and strength. The sheer amount of training it takes for each pirouette and grand jeté deserves the honour and admiration the tutu represents. It's not just a costume. It's a symbol, a reminder of how we, as ballet dancers, are dedicated to this demanding yet exquisite art form. Let's break down some common tutu styles: * **The Classical Tutu:** This one is probably the first image that pops into your head when you think of "tutu." Think Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake - white, multiple layers, and a graceful, elegant look. * **The Romantic Tutu:** Think La Sylphide. Lighter and shorter than the classical style, with a more delicate and airy feel. These tutus were introduced to ballet during the 19th century, often with a billowing or pouffy appearance. * **The "Bell" Tutu:** You can't talk about tutus without talking about the one-layer, shorter style you see in Giselle, where a little “bell” effect gathers at the waist, adding a distinctive bell-shape, hence the name. * **The "Costume" Tutu:** You will not find tutus in every ballet, so this one deserves its own category. This version is a hybrid that you can see in most classical ballets, a costume rather than a tutu. A simple two layer skirt for example that is longer in length, like the ones in La Bayadere and Don Quixote. But why should we only look at tutus on Tuesday? My philosophy is to embrace the ballerina within, so don't let Tuesday be the only time to wear a tutu! Feel free to dress in your favourite ballerina clothes - I love rocking a leotard with a skirt for a casual vibe and sometimes just throw on my leg warmers because who doesn't love an added dose of warmth with a side of chic? #tututuesday inspiration in Canada Tutus have definitely found their place on the stage, and in our everyday life too! I'm so inspired by the amazing Canadian ballet dancers who are putting on dazzling performances all over the country. We are such a hotbed of ballet talent. I find the world of ballet to be truly captivating, but don't think it's just for girls! This beautiful art form welcomes boys of all ages and dance skill level, from their initial first steps to the highest echelon of their artistry. You'll often see amazing ballet performances in major Canadian cities like Vancouver, Montreal, and Toronto, and let's not forget all those hidden gems we have across British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Ontario, and New Brunswick to name a few. As much as I love going to a dance studio, a live performance, and watching the iconic productions across the country, you can see me wearing a tutu any day of the week in the studio, outside for my ballet classes, and at events. If I’m feeling a little shy about the tulle, my favorite way to embrace Tutu Tuesday is to sport the fashion version of it. That's right, there are actually so many creative and fashionable ways to incorporate a "tutu look" without even putting on a real tutu, for those times you want the aesthetic without the layers. Let me break it down! * For example, rock a cute skirt that has a similar frilly and flowing effect. * How about a tulle skirt - there’s plenty to go around! The amazing thing about these is you can get them in any colour, any size, and the amount of frill, they just rock, especially when they flow with the movement. * For a more casual look, even try incorporating a few delicate tulle layers or even ruffles in your clothing! I am all about having a good time, embracing our passion for this gorgeous and exhilarating art form and making memories that we will always cherish.
