Tutu Tuesday in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia: A Celebration of Whimsy and Grace

Hey everyone, it’s your girl, Olivia, back with another installment of my blog! It’s been a while, but I've been busy whipping up some new choreography and honing my pirouettes. Today's post is extra special, though. It’s dedicated to a trend I've been obsessing over - Tutu Tuesday. Yeah, you heard me right. Every Tuesday, I rock a tutu and embrace my inner ballerina, even if it’s just a trip to the grocery store. Because let’s face it, life's too short to not wear a tutu once in a while!

I’ve gotta admit, this whole Tutu Tuesday thing started with a lighthearted Facebook post by my friend, Sarah. We were chatting about how much we loved twirling around in our dance studio tutus, and it struck me - why not share the tutu love with the world?

Now, you might be wondering, what’s the point of Tutu Tuesday? What’s so special about wearing a tutu? It’s simple: a tutu is a reminder to dance through life, to be fearless and to find the joy in everyday moments. Besides, isn't it more fun to waltz through the park than just walking? And let's be real, who wouldn’t want to have their groceries delivered in style?

But the beauty of Tutu Tuesday is its versatility. I've embraced the wide world of tutus, and my Tuesday outfits have become a delightful dance with different styles.

Let's delve into some of my fave tutu types and their moods:

  • The Romantic Tutu - You know those dreamy, billowy tulle tutus that make you feel like a princess straight out of a fairytale? They’re my go-to for romantic dates or fancy brunch dates. It’s a great excuse to embrace a delicate feminine side, while still keeping things effortlessly stylish.
  • The Modern Tutu - Think asymmetric designs, vibrant colours and edgy materials. This tutu doesn't follow traditional ballet rules. It’s more about self-expression, about pushing boundaries and creating your own personal style statement. I pair mine with edgy tops and chunky boots, which definitely make for some interesting head-turning street-style!
  • The Short & Sweet Tutu - This one's my everyday classic. It’s like a playful mini skirt, and you can easily dress it up or down. Perfect for coffee with friends, errands around town, or maybe even a casual dance-off in the supermarket aisles (I've been known to do that). It's versatile, playful and always puts a smile on my face.

Here's the thing about tutu Tuesday in Port Coquitlam – it’s brought the community closer! I've seen locals wearing tutus everywhere! Even my grandma, who just learned about it from my little cousin, hopped on board. Now she shows up to our family dinners in a pastel tutu and sparkly headband. Seeing other people embrace the whimsy and enjoy the freedom of self-expression through this fashion choice has made this little project a lot bigger than I could have imagined.

But don’t take my word for it! You’ve got to see it for yourself. Here are some of my top #tututuesday moments:

  • A group of teenagers practicing ballet on the community center lawn in their tutus.
  • A group of friends walking through the farmers market in their tutu attire, twirling and giggling like kids on a sugar rush.
  • A group of office workers having a spontaneous "Tutu-time" break in the park during lunch. Yes, they even included their boss!

Of course, no talk of tutus can be complete without mentioning ballet in Canada. Here, ballet is woven into our culture, not just through professional companies like the National Ballet of Canada, but also in the passion of amateur dancers and dedicated teachers like my very own. There’s a certain warmth and sense of community here, which makes this whole tutu experience that much sweeter.

So what are you waiting for? If you’re in Port Coquitlam, or anywhere in Canada, step out and twirl, twirl, twirl your way through your Tuesday! I’d love to see you embrace Tutu Tuesday! You can share your pics on Instagram with the hashtag #tututuesday and #portcoquitlambc and maybe even get featured on my next blog post!

Stay stylish and always remember to dance your way through life!
