Tutu Tuesday in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan: A Celebration of Dance and Fashion

Hey everyone, it’s your girl, Chloe, back with another blog post! It’s Tutu Tuesday and I’m here to talk about one of my favorite things in the world - tutus!

For those of you who don’t know, Tutu Tuesday is a weekly event celebrated on social media, where people share pictures of themselves in tutus. It’s a fun way to show off your love of dance and fashion, and it's especially popular here in Canada.

Of course, here in Prince Albert, we’ve been celebrating ballet and dance for over 100 years. Prince Albert was settled in the late 19th Century by folks who'd immigrated from Britain and other parts of Europe. These folk loved their dancing! The Prince Albert Arts Centre, originally the home to The Prince Albert Grand Theatre, still holds weekly events celebrating dancing - whether classical ballet, modern dance or ballroom styles.

But you don’t have to be a professional dancer to get in on the Tutu Tuesday fun! Whether you’re a seasoned ballerino, or simply enjoy twirling around in a skirt, there’s a tutu out there for everyone.

I love how versatile tutus can be. You can dress them up or down depending on the occasion. For example, here in Prince Albert we've got lots of beautiful places for dancing outdoors, whether on the banks of the North Saskatchewan River or at one of our many parks, like Rotary Park. So, a fun and simple, full-skirted tulle tutu with a cute pair of denim shorts is perfect for a casual daytime dance.

Of course, Prince Albert also has great spots to take in some live dance shows - from the Prince Albert Arts Centre to the many performance stages at the annual Prince Albert Winter Festival and the Saskatchewan Jazz Festival.

For these performances, it's a classic romantic tutu, a fluffy cloud of tulle, with an airy bodice and sparkly details that you should pair with your favourite heels - I like some beautiful satin stilettos, for a touch of glitz!

You’ve gotta try them out, trust me, these tutus will have you looking and feeling fabulous.

When choosing your tutu, consider the following: Tutu Style:

  • Romantic tutu: A classic and graceful choice, with multiple layers of tulle, with a traditional long, flowing skirt and a snug-fitting bodice with elegant details like satin ribbons or flowers.
  • Classical tutu: Often seen on dancers in famous ballets, these are characterized by a simple and elegant look with a short, layered skirt and a fitted bodice.
  • Modern tutu: These are more versatile than the romantic and classical options, so you can go for an eclectic style that’s both functional and fashionable. Modern tutus come in different shapes, lengths, and designs, insisting more on clean lines and flow. Some even come with a variety of color combinations! This tutu’s for a fearless dancer who likes to create their own statement with modern materials and an asymmetrical silhouette.

No matter what style you choose, there are things to remember when choosing the perfect Tutu:

  • Comfort: I'm sure we've all seen dancers struggling with stiff, itchy tutus and trust me, no one enjoys that. Make sure to select a fabric that is light, comfortable, and doesn’t get in your way of dancing. The best thing about tulle is it's soft, light and airy.
  • Durability: There's nothing more disheartening than your tutu falling apart when you're trying to showcase your dance moves! Make sure the tulle is properly stitched together to last throughout your dance. This will not only last you longer but also mean it holds up and stays elegant even as you're really putting your dancing skills on show.
  • Your Style: And it all boils down to what looks best for you. Some of my favourites include a short tutu that highlights my legs and shows off my leaps and twirls. But you might be drawn to the elegant and beautiful look of a romantic tutu. Choose a tutu that reflects your own unique sense of style.

There’s nothing quite like the feeling of twirling in a tutu, so grab your favourite and get ready for some fun! I can't wait to see your gorgeous pictures - keep them coming.

As always, thank you for reading and keep dancing!
