Tutu Tuesday in South Glengarry, Ontario: A Celebration of Ballet and Style #tututuesday

Hey everyone! It’s your favourite fashion-loving ballet dancer, back with another Tutu Tuesday post. This week, we’re taking our tutus on a trip to South Glengarry, Ontario, a region bursting with charm, natural beauty, and – surprise, surprise! – a blossoming ballet scene. Let’s get twirling!

I’ve been meaning to visit South Glengarry for ages, and finally, thanks to a fantastic ballet workshop opportunity, I had the chance. It was a whirlwind tour, and trust me, you’ll want to pack your dancing shoes and your best tutu for a trip to this beautiful corner of Canada.

The workshop took place at the charming Glengarry Arts Centre, nestled in the heart of Alexandria. This centre has a true community vibe, and the instructors were incredibly warm and passionate, welcoming dancers of all levels. I found myself connecting with other ballerinas, sharing tips, and swapping stories about the joys (and, let’s be honest, the occasional aches!) of ballet.

But let’s talk about the tutus! We explored a range of styles throughout the workshop, and let me tell you, my Tutu Tuesday fashion heart was bursting with glee. There were classic Romantic tutus with layers upon layers of tulle, making me feel like a delicate butterfly, a ballerina who just stepped out of a fairytale.

  • A little detail that really caught my eye: Many dancers, especially the more experienced ones, were sporting custom-made tutus, hand-crafted to match their personal style and body type. I’m not sure what’s more inspiring – their dedication to the art of dance or the sheer beauty of their unique tutus!
  • One of the newer additions to the ballet scene, the contemporary tutu was in full force! The contemporary tutus often had clean lines, interesting silhouettes, and were even incorporating some edgy and experimental fabrics like spandex, mesh, or leather. This type of tutu spoke to me. They’re modern, daring, and a great example of how ballet can continuously evolve.
  • And, of course, no ballet exploration is complete without the ever-iconic, the one and only, the tutu with the traditional pointe shoes! The pointe shoes – those iconic and elegant footwear – bring their own dose of drama and glamour to any tutu ensemble. Imagine: those perfect leaps, the graceful turns, all accompanied by the elegant swirl of the traditional tutu. The magic, you see, isn't just in the dance, but in how it all comes together!

From our workshop, we got to have a real “Canadian” picnic, enjoying the local flavors of Ontario, and took a scenic walk through the town, stopping for pictures at picturesque historical landmarks, making the whole experience so memorable and special. But let’s face it, I couldn’t leave South Glengarry without a stop at some amazing local boutiques!

As a fashion-forward dancer, a day of exploration in a new town wouldn’t be complete without some window-shopping (and, okay, maybe a bit of shopping too)! One thing that truly stood out to me was how many boutiques featured locally made items and embraced sustainable fashion, showcasing beautiful craftsmanship and ethically sourced fabrics. I picked up the cutest little embroidered cardigan – the perfect statement piece for my next ballet class, and I can't wait to showcase it on social media!

So, my friends, whether you’re a die-hard ballet fan, a fashionista, or simply looking for a weekend getaway filled with charming town vibes, South Glengarry is definitely worth the trip. Just make sure to bring your dancing shoes and a stylish tutu. Let’s keep the ballet flame burning bright in Canada, and beyond, one Tutu Tuesday at a time.
