Tutu Tuesday in Morinville, Alberta: A Celebration of Ballet and Style

Hey everyone! It's your girl, Clara, back with another fashion-forward post. Today's topic is near and dear to my heart โ€“ tutus! I mean, who doesn't love a good tutu? I know I do! And I'm here to tell you that there's no better place to celebrate these whimsical wonders than right here in Morinville, Alberta. That's why I'm throwing my weight (pun intended!) behind #tututuesday, a new trend I'm starting. Let's make every Tuesday a celebration of everything tutu!

You see, I've been lucky enough to dance professionally all my life. But even beyond my days spent at the barre, I find myself constantly drawn to the grace and elegance of the tutu. It's like the ultimate statement piece โ€“ it instantly elevates any outfit, and it can be worn in so many different ways.

Now, I know what you're thinking: "Tutus are just for ballerinas!" And that's partially true. After all, tutus are synonymous with ballet โ€“ from the classic romantic tutus of the early 19th century to the contemporary tutus we see on stages across the country. In Canada, our ballet history is truly rich โ€“ with national ballet companies like The National Ballet of Canada and The Royal Winnipeg Ballet setting the stage for countless Canadian ballet talents. The world-renowned School of Ballet, The National Ballet School of Canada (NBS) and the professional and recreational studios across the country all celebrate the ballerina's classic uniform and its impact on the arts.

But let's be honest โ€“ tutus are for everyone. Who doesn't feel a little bit more confident and magical in a tutu? I believe that tutus have the power to spark joy and creativity in all of us, and that's exactly why I want to see everyone rocking them on Tuesdays!

And don't think that just because it's Tuesday that your tutu choices are limited. Tutus can be customized and recreated into countless forms. I'm talking about different lengths, colours, styles and textures! The possibilities are truly endless.

Here's a quick rundown of some of my favourite tutu styles to help you get started:

  • Romantic Tutu: A classic choice with a multi-layered, poufy skirt. A whimsical dream, best suited for fairytale looks. These were made popular in the early 19th century as an alternative to the earlier, and less practical, single layer form fitting and heavy tunics.
  • Classical Tutu: Usually seen on professional ballerinas, this type is typically shorter and more fitted around the waist than the Romantic Tutu. And that iconic short, and full, conical form is achieved by carefully layering rows of tulle on top of one another to create that perfect ballet look. In essence, a classical tutu was a modification to the Romantic tutu, which had fallen out of fashion at the time, the 1930s.
  • Contemporary Tutu: As a more recent creation in the world of dancewear, this tutu is characterized by a minimalist design that often incorporates interesting fabric combinations. A truly unique expression, with asymmetrical skirts, layering fabrics, colours and unique cuts.
  • Costume Tutu: Often paired with character dances. Costumed tutus are designed to support a particular piece. A playful, imaginative take on tutu styles, they allow a performer to embrace their inner "Tutu Queen".
  • Everyday Tutu: Because why not embrace a tutu every day? That's what #tututuesday is all about! A stylish approach for everyday fun. The tutu for the everyday person can range in length from mini tutu to ballerina tutu, or anywhere in-between! And this makes tutu styling endless and an attainable expression.

No matter what kind of tutu you choose, remember to embrace your own unique style and have fun! The key is to have fun with fashion and make the most of your inner creativity.

Now that you're ready to dive into the world of tutus, why not celebrate your #tututuesday style with your besties?
