Tutu Tuesday in Selkirk, Manitoba: A Celebration of Dance and Fashion

Hey everyone! It’s your favourite Canadian ballerina and blogger, Olivia here. Today's all about a special day in my week, and that's Tutu Tuesday! And there's no better place to celebrate than in my home province of Manitoba. Specifically, today I'm bringing the tutus to the charming city of Selkirk, known for its beautiful riverfront and rich history.

You know me – I love a good Tutu Tuesday. There's just something so empowering about twirling in a tutu, whether you're on stage, practicing in the studio, or simply enjoying a fun photoshoot. I get to embrace the elegance and the power of ballet – both a beloved art form and a seriously demanding sport.

This week's Tutu Tuesday inspiration comes straight from my heart: celebrating Canadian ballet! I'm incredibly proud of the amazing ballet talent we have here in Canada, from world-renowned companies like the National Ballet of Canada in Toronto, to the exciting smaller companies all over the country, like the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, my home town favourite!.

Let's Talk Tutu Styles

Now, as every good tutu aficionado knows, tutus are far more than just puffy skirts! It's all about the style and the vibe. I can’t possibly talk about all the styles in one post, but today I'm thinking about:

  • Romantic Tutus: Think soft, flowing lines, lots of tulle, and graceful silhouettes. Perfect for romantic ballets like "Giselle" or "La Sylphide."
  • Classical Tutus: These are the iconic, multi-layered, and traditionally “grand” tutus with the stiff, structured shapes. These are essential for big ballets like "Swan Lake," and they are also quite common in many “classical” or 19th-century ballets.
  • Modern Tutus: Forget the frills, this one’s about clean lines, modern fabrics, and unique designs. I love seeing contemporary ballet companies really push the boundaries of tutu design, and these tutus reflect a ballet world of contemporary artistry.

In honour of my love for dance and Tutu Tuesday, here's a little behind-the-scenes peek into my week:

On any given day, I could be found practicing at my favourite studio in Winnipeg. I've been dancing since I was a little girl, and I’m eternally grateful for the strong ballet scene in my city and the support I've had from mentors and teachers. Ballet is more than a hobby for me. It's a lifestyle, a way of expressing myself, and an incredible way to keep in shape.

My Tutu Tuesday fashion tips are actually really easy. Today’s look: a beautiful black and white tulle tutu with a chic black leotard. A hint of bold, ruby-red lipstick and I'm good to go!

Of course, I’m wearing my favourite ballet shoes. My go-to pair are pointe shoes because it's such an exhilarating feeling being en pointe – the energy it takes and the precision it takes, I love it!

This Tuesday, it was all about channeling my love of Canadian ballet while showcasing the amazing art of tutus – whether I'm wearing a flowing Romantic tutu or a sleek Modern one. These styles just make me happy.

Speaking of the love of dance and how powerful and elegant tutus can be – I hope to see more and more tutus being worn and loved, all over Manitoba, Canada, and beyond. There's no better way to show off a sense of personal style, confidence, and creativity! Don't forget, this week is #TutuTuesday, let’s all be inspired to embrace the beauty of tutus, in every style and colour, everywhere. Stay tuned, and don’t forget to share your tutu photos! Happy dancing!
