Tutu Tuesday in Saint-Felix-de-Valois, Quebec: A Celebration of All Things Tutu ## #tututuesday Hey, everyone! It's your friendly neighbourhood ballet blogger here, ready to take you on a delightful journey into the world of tutus. It's #tututuesday after all, and that means only one thing: a celebration of this iconic garment! Today, I’m taking you on a tour of all things tutu right here in charming Saint-Felix-de-Valois, Quebec. As a Canadian ballet dancer with a penchant for fashion, I have to admit, there’s a certain je ne sais quoi about a tutu. From the romantic flounce of a classic Romantic tutu to the powerful lines of a modern contemporary design, there’s a style for every dancer and every occasion. But this isn't just about dancing, it's about expression. We’re talking tutus in every colour, texture, and style. A classic white tutu is timeless, but have you seen the magic of a fiery red, a dazzling purple, or a stunning emerald green? Think about those sparkly embellishments, too! I love how a tutu can transform a room and elevate your outfit. So whether you’re hitting the ballet studio or simply having a fun night out, a tutu is always a welcome addition. You can even create a fabulous look with a DIY tutu by gathering tulle in your favourite colours. Add a ribbon, some sparkle, and maybe even a feather – and voila! Your inner ballerina will be screaming with delight! But this week, let's talk about our favourite Canadian ballerina - the inimitable Karen Kain! Kain's incredible artistry and elegance have left a lasting mark on the Canadian ballet world, especially her performances in the iconic Swan Lake, her incredible poise in the "Black Swan" pas de deux still takes my breath away. The dramatic way she would twirl around the stage in a stunning white tutu and black swan costume truly embodies the power of movement and expression. She's a legend in the world of Canadian dance and inspiration to all of us, particularly her dedication to inspiring a love of ballet in younger generations, giving aspiring dancers like me something to strive for. So, join me on a whirlwind tour of Saint-Felix-de-Valois! What's On The Agenda Today? * We’re going to start with a visit to the local dance academy. They have been so generous in sharing the amazing tutu collection. * We’ll have a chance to take a peek inside the workshop of a talented local costume maker who makes the most exquisite tutus! * We'll be ending our day with a fantastic performance by a local troupe, where we can see these breathtaking tutues come to life! Let’s kick off our journey! First stop – the dance studio. I can hear the pitter-patter of ballet shoes and the music of the barre calling! This studio is buzzing with life and energy. The dance floor gleams under the studio lights and everything is in perfect alignment. You can feel the love for ballet just walking in. What I found here was a treasure trove of tutus in every shape, size, and colour you could imagine. There were the classical Romantic tutus, those puffy layers of tulle, so airy and dreamy – perfect for waltzing in the clouds! Then there were the contemporary tutus, made for strong lines and powerful movements. Some were daring and sleek while others embraced soft textures and flowing lines, and then there were those sparkling designs that captured every ounce of the stage light These dance students told me all about their favorite tutus. There's a definite love for the romantic tutus among those learning classical techniques, while the more contemporary styles are embraced by those wanting expressive freedom on the stage, something you just can’t achieve wearing a classic tulle. One student, a graceful young dancer with sparkling eyes, even showed me her special tutu she’s been working on! The passion for these elegant dancewear creations was palpable - it's a big deal for any ballet dancer! They are like a symbol of grace and artistry. Now, time to head to the costume workshop! This studio is like a fairytale in progress, every crepe piece of tulle is a masterpiece in the making. It's such an intriguing and creative place, the studio walls are covered with sketches, design inspiration is everywhere. I talked with the studio’s owner and costume designer. Her story was incredible – a lifetime devoted to crafting dancewear masterpieces. She shared how she loves making custom pieces, like the magical creations she makes for her clients and it shows - each design flows, each line and cut seems perfect for the stage! The meticulous craftsmanship involved in constructing a tutu is an art form in itself! Every seam, every stitch is so precise. The expert hands working the delicate fabrics—what a beautiful blend of passion and craftsmanship! There were boxes full of every shade of tulle, bolts of exquisite lace, sparkling crystals in every shade - this was truly a designer’s dream! A true artist knows that creating a truly special piece isn't just a craft, it's about bringing their own artistry to the canvas – which in this case is tulle! The workshop hummed with activity—it felt magical! It wasn't just about sewing or creating tutus. The process was about expression. To top it all off, my final stop - the live performance! This was truly an amazing experience, to see these designs dance under the stage lights and watch how those magical tutu silhouettes come to life was an absolute privilege. As I witnessed the passionate energy of the dancers and the elegance of their moves, I thought about how amazing it was that a single garment could carry such meaning. It wasn’t just a costume, it was a testament to a lifelong love for art. The passion was everywhere and it filled me with a new love for this beautiful city and the talented artists here. So, Saint-Felix-de-Valois really is a city embracing the joy of movement, dance, and the beautiful tutu!
