Tutu Tuesday in Sussex, New Brunswick: A Celebration of the Canadian Ballet

Hey there, fellow dance enthusiasts! It’s your girl, Claire, back with another installment of my fashion-forward blog. Today, I’m thrilled to be sharing all things #tututuesday right from my heart, or rather, my tutu-loving soul! But first, let’s dive into why this day is extra special.

This Tuesday isn’t just any Tuesday. This is a celebration of everything tutus in Sussex, New Brunswick! Our community has always had a deep love for the performing arts, and ballet in particular holds a special place in our hearts. Sussex is home to the thriving “New Brunswick School of Classical Ballet” – it’s one of the leading schools for ballet education in all of Canada, offering world-class training to young dancers.

As I sip on my locally roasted coffee (New Brunswick does coffee exceptionally well!), I can't help but reminisce about the classic ballet "The Nutcracker." Every December, our local community comes alive with this festive performance, transforming into a wonderland of tutus, sparkling costumes, and, of course, the infamous sugarplum fairy! And guess what? You can often spot the famous "classical romantic tutu" during those performances! Its wispy layers and soft, romantic feel are iconic and make for absolutely stunning stage presence.

Speaking of tutus, today we’re going to take a peek into some of the most beloved and recognizable styles:

  • The classic romantic tutu: The graceful silhouette, often seen in works like “Swan Lake”, is undeniably elegant and timeless, giving ballerinas the grace of ballerinas a sense of effortless movement.
  • The "paquita" tutu: Short, airy and almost a bit cheeky – perfect for those vibrant, upbeat pieces! I particularly love its intricate layering and that delicate, slightly frumpy, but fun design.
  • The "bell" tutu: Another beloved classic. It takes the graceful silhouette of the Romantic tutu and emphasizes the dancer's posture with a gentle flare.
  • The "tutu-on-a-hoop" or the "pancake tutu:" This modern design features a large hoop beneath the skirt, creating an interesting geometric shape that adds dynamism and visual intrigue. This design truly exemplifies the evolution of ballet fashion.
  • "Contemporary tutus:" They blur the line between traditional and modern ballet with unique, creative shapes, colours and designs! The versatility and boldness are fantastic for contemporary and neoclassical dance styles.

Whether it's the airy layers of the romantic tutu or the structured beauty of the pancake tutu, they all bring their own unique touch to the stage!

Now, as for Sussex and #tututuesday in this fabulous Canadian city – it’s time to channel our inner ballerina. This Tuesday is the perfect occasion to put on our favourite tutu – even if it's for a quick spin around the studio, and celebrate our passion for dance! You might be surprised at how a tutu can turn even a routine Tuesday into an event. Just a tiny hint of sparkly fabric can instantly elevate your mood and turn the everyday into the extraordinary!

And remember, the fun isn’t just about tutus. It’s about fostering a community where we embrace all things ballet, no matter our age, skill level, or whether or not we own a tutu! Here’s to #tututuesday in Sussex, New Brunswick, and to celebrating ballet with our fellow Canadians. Happy dancing, my fellow dance enthusiasts!
