Tutu Tuesday in Kindersley, Saskatchewan: A Whirlwind of Fashion and Pointe Shoes

Hey everyone, it's your friendly neighbourhood ballerina here, back with another installment of Tutu Tuesday! This week, I'm taking you on a whirlwind tour of fashion and pointe shoes in the heart of Saskatchewan. Buckle up, because things are about to get tutu-licious!

Kindersley, you say? Well, let me tell you, this charming town might be a bit off the beaten track, but it's full of surprises, including a surprisingly vibrant dance scene! While I'm here for a quick visit, I'm determined to experience everything the city has to offer. From the adorable coffee shops serving up hot lattes to the impressive murals dotting the downtown area, I'm soaking it all in.

But of course, the real reason I'm here is for Tutu Tuesday! The challenge, you see, is to showcase the beautiful diversity of tutus beyond the classic white, full-length "Swan Lake" tutu. We're talking everything from the whimsical, pastel-hued tutus perfect for "The Nutcracker" to the sleek, modern, and even asymmetrical tutus found in contemporary ballet.

As a ballet dancer, the tutu is more than just a piece of clothing. It's a symbol of our artistry, our passion, and our dedication. I wouldn't trade the feeling of gliding across the stage in a perfectly-fitting tutu for the world! But let's face it, in the real world, we're not always on stage. And that's where the fun of Tutu Tuesday comes in. This challenge embraces the versatility of the tutu by showing off its everyday appeal.

So how can we incorporate these iconic dancewear into our everyday outfits? This is where I've got some insider tips for all of you! It's about channeling the spirit of the tutu without sacrificing practicality.

A Tutu Tuesday Style Guide for Everyone

  • Embrace the layers: This is a key component of tutu style! Just like dancers use a multitude of layers under their tutu to shape and define, you can utilize different layers of fabric to create a dramatic, elegant look. Consider adding a flowy, transparent fabric over a basic tank top for a unique and graceful touch.
  • Play with colour: Just like tutus come in a spectrum of colours beyond white, don't be afraid to experiment! Incorporate a pop of colour into your outfit. A vibrant sweater paired with jeans can be elevated with the right shoes and accessories for an effortless tutu-inspired ensemble.
  • Invest in versatile ballet flats: Not only are ballet flats super comfortable, but they can easily be styled up or down, adding a touch of classic elegance. Go for a pair with embellishments, different patterns, or a touch of glitter for a "Tutu Tuesday" inspired twist.
  • Don't underestimate the power of a great belt: Belts can totally transform your look! Just like the layers of tulle in a tutu add definition, belts define the waistline and add structure. Choose a belt with a sparkly buckle for a festive touch, or a leather belt with a statement buckle for a more sophisticated look.
  • Embrace a hint of tulle: Want a touch of tutu magic? Experiment with incorporating tulle into your outfit. Try a tulle scarf, a tulle skirt layered over jeans, or a tulle overlay on your favourite sweater. These are low-key, elegant ways to express your inner ballerina.

Tutu Tuesday at the Ballet School in Kindersley

Now let's talk ballet! Kindersley is blessed with a thriving dance school! This charming town might not be on the map for international ballet, but I've got to say the dedication of the instructors and dancers is quite something. They've built a strong sense of community within the dance school, and it's incredibly inspiring!

So I made my way over to the local ballet studio, the Kindersley School of Dance. The students were in the midst of a ballet class when I arrived, their faces beaming with a mixture of joy and determination. As they practiced their elegant moves, I found myself getting completely swept up in the artistry and grace of the students.

And you know what? We talked about Tutu Tuesday! We discussed different tutu styles - the puffy romantic styles from Giselle to the more modern sleek styles like those featured in a piece choreographed by Crystal Pite. I even got a chance to demonstrate a few ballet steps in the gorgeous leotards, and I'm telling you, the feeling of dancing in a leotard is truly second to none. It was amazing to be around such incredible dancers and I felt incredibly welcomed, just like one big tutu-loving family.
