Tutu Tuesday in Lewisporte, Newfoundland and Labrador: A Whirlwind of Tulle and Tradition

Hey everyone! It’s your girl, Chloe, back at it again, bringing you the latest and greatest from the world of ballet and fashion, this time from the beautiful city of Lewisporte, Newfoundland and Labrador. You know what day it is: it’s Tutu Tuesday!
But before we dive into the twirling delights of the day, let’s talk about what makes this week’s #tututuesday so special.
Firstly, I'm absolutely loving being back home in Newfoundland. I'm excited to be sharing some of my ballet love with a new generation here, and what better way to do that than with a day dedicated to the beautiful and versatile tutu?
Newfoundland is known for its stunning scenery, rugged coastline, and incredible hospitality. It’s a province filled with talent and inspiration, and it's no surprise that ballet is thriving here. From the passionate dancers gracing the stage at the LSPU Hall in St. John's, to the budding talents in smaller communities like Lewisporte, there’s a buzz of energy in the Canadian ballet scene right now that's just infectious.

Celebrating Tutu Styles and the Grace of the Dance

Okay, let’s talk tutus.
My journey back to Lewisporte, after performing with the National Ballet of Canada, reminded me that every ballerina’s relationship with the tutu is unique and special. I always felt there was magic in it: from the first time I tried on a fluffy, classic tutu, with layers of tulle and a graceful sweep, to discovering the intricate designs of contemporary tutus, there’s this magical feeling associated with it, a feeling of empowerment. I’ve seen these magical moments replayed in every little ballerina's eyes.

Today, in Lewisporte, we have tutus of all kinds - from the traditional "romantic" tutu with its soft, cascading layers of tulle to the shorter and more modern "pencil" tutu with its streamlined elegance.

Tutu Tuesday Activities: A Dance Extravaganza

Let’s get into what we did today to make Tutu Tuesday a grand affair. This is the real fun stuff.

  • The Tutu Walk: The day started with the Tutu Walk, a grand parade through the streets of Lewisporte. From young dancers in their sparkling tutus to the seasoned pros showing off some serious pointe work, everyone strutted their stuff in their fabulous frocks!
  • Tutu Masterclass: Up next was a Tutu Masterclass led by my amazing colleague, Isabelle, who happens to be a veteran dancer of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. We went through basic ballet movements like pliés, tendus, and port de bras, but this time with a fun, tutu twist!
  • Tutu Design Workshop: Here’s where the creative juices really started flowing! Using repurposed materials like ribbons, tulle scraps, and old ballet shoes, the workshop turned out some absolutely incredible pieces of tutu fashion art!
  • The Tutu Tea Party: Finally, it was time for a very special Tutu Tea Party. We all sat down for delicious finger foods and tea while watching a film about famous ballerinas in history – how the tutu became so iconic – then it was back to tutu business.
This time, we went full fashion-forward. We had an expert in upcycled fashion teaching the younger girls and even grandmothers the art of upcycling and how to make stunning tutu outfits using the old ones we already had at home. What can I say? It was all very stylish!

Tutu Tuesday Takeaways

The best part of Tutu Tuesday was the joy in the air and how many smiles I saw! Seeing everyone express themselves in such a fun and playful way really emphasizes what’s special about the world of dance, especially here in Canada.

I’m always blown away by how dance can bring people together and what a powerful tool it is. Tutu Tuesday did just that and a lot more. I felt empowered as well as touched to see such an authentic appreciation for art and tradition through a universal language like ballet.

Until next time,

XOXO, Chloe
