Tutu Tuesday in Outlook, Saskatchewan #tututuesday

Hey dance fam, it's your girl, Olivia here, back with another Tutu Tuesday post, straight from the heart of the prairies, Outlook, Saskatchewan! You might be wondering, "Olivia, what in the world are you doing in Outlook?" Well, let me tell you, this small town has some big dreams and even bigger tutus, believe me.

I’ve been touring with the Canadian National Ballet for the past year, and while I love travelling to exciting places around the globe, nothing quite compares to the feeling of coming home and seeing the familiar faces and, dare I say, amazingly stylish dance scene that we have here in the prairies. You see, even in the middle of nowhere, there’s a real dedication to the arts, especially to the beauty and grace of ballet.

It all started when I bumped into my childhood ballet teacher, Mrs. LaFleur, while grabbing a latte at the local coffee shop. We ended up reminiscing about our old days at the Outlook Dance Academy. You know, those long hours of pliés and pirouettes, the constant aching muscles, and the unforgettable magic of stepping out onto that stage. But Mrs. LaFleur's story was what really sparked a fire in my soul: she's leading a project to bring back a long-forgotten dance festival, The Prairie Twirl. Can you believe it?! The excitement on her face was contagious, so I decided I had to do my part to support this incredible initiative.

For the past few months, we've been busy prepping, spreading the word, and, of course, practicing our moves! We're hoping to see a huge turnout, not just from Outlook but from surrounding towns as well. It's amazing to witness how this community is rallying together, bringing together aspiring ballerinas of all ages and levels of expertise.

Speaking of ballerinas, have you ever wondered about the history of tutus? Did you know there’s a rich variety of styles that reflect different periods and choreographic concepts? There’s the Romantic tutu, made famous in the 19th century with its light and airy layers, symbolizing ethereal grace. Then there's the Classical tutu, with a shorter, tighter bodice and layered, flowing skirt, designed to showcase a dancer's virtuosity and powerful movements. And of course, there are the Contemporary tutus, made of stretch fabrics and less restrictive styles that offer flexibility and freedom of expression. No matter which style we choose, the tutu remains an iconic symbol of the art form and its transformative power.

Okay, so here’s the deal: on Tuesday, the stage is going to be filled with vibrant, colorful tutus, from the classically-elegant, to the playfully contemporary, to the uniquely quirky and personalized that makes the Prairie Twirl a truly magical event.

This week’s #tututuesday is extra special because we’re having a tutu design contest! Want to participate? Share a photo of your best tutu, whether you’ve sewn it yourself or purchased a unique creation. Remember to tag #tututuesday and @outlookdanceacademy so we can share your fashion flair. The winner gets to perform a special solo at the festival! Now that’s a chance to shine, right? But remember, it’s not just about the outfits, it’s about sharing our love for ballet and coming together as a community.

I’m really hoping you can join us! Get your tickets, grab a friend, put on your favorite dance outfit, and be prepared to twirl the night away at the Prairie Twirl, because in Outlook, Saskatchewan, it's not just a dance, it’s a celebration of passion, artistry, and the unwavering spirit of dance! See you on the stage!

Here’s what I’ll be sporting on Tuesday night:

  • A vintage, romantic-style tutu with tulle layers flowing gracefully around my legs. I think the ethereal vibe fits the setting of Outlook beautifully. The color is a stunning lilac that brings out the glow of my eyes!
  • A delicate, beaded bodice that reflects the magic and sparkle of ballet. I want to feel like a fairy dancing among the prairie flowers.
  • I can’t forget the perfect pair of point shoes! Mine are custom made and they are soft but incredibly durable. I need to trust my shoes completely when I’m on stage.
  • For this occasion, I’ll wear a dainty crown, adorned with tiny pearls, to really represent that fairytale vibe!

My advice for getting the perfect Tutu Look:

  • Embrace a little vintage inspiration – check out your local thrift stores for old fabrics or even second-hand tutus! There’s a real romanticism in finding hidden gems like this, just like finding that special ballet class. Who knows what hidden treasures you’ll uncover!
  • Play with colors! Bold colors are always eye-catching and make for amazing photographs! If you want something a bit more understated, go with the classics: black and white!
  • Never underestimate the power of accessories. A sparkling headband, a floral pin, or even a statement necklace can really elevate your look. And don’t forget, a beautiful hairstyle completes the picture. A classic bun, elegant braid, or a sophisticated chignon are always good choices! But remember, don't be afraid to be unique!

Let’s make this Tutu Tuesday unforgettable! Until then, keep twirling, keep dancing, and keep sharing your #tututuesday moments! Stay safe and healthy. Lots of love!
