Tutu Tuesday in Dundurn, Saskatchewan: A Celebration of Pointe Shoes and Plaid

Hey everyone! It's your girl, Claire, back with another Tutu Tuesday post. This week, I'm taking you on a whirlwind tour of all things tulle and tutus right here in Dundurn, Saskatchewan. That's right, folks, the prairie heartland is home to some seriously stylish dancers.

Now, I know what you're thinking. Dundurn? Ballet? Not exactly your typical New York City, London, or Paris ballet scene, right? But trust me, ballet thrives in Canada, and the spirit of dance is alive and well out here.

Tutu Tuesday is a weekly celebration of ballet and dancewear, but for me, it’s about something a bit more profound. It’s a chance to reflect on my journey as a dancer and what dance means to the Canadian spirit. We have this incredible passion for storytelling, art, and of course, the great outdoors – and dance in Canada encapsulates all of these things.

I’ve worn more than my fair share of tutus, from classic, romantic to modern and abstract. Here’s what I’ve learned:

  • Romantic Tutu: The quintessential tutu! Soft, flowing layers of tulle, usually worn in classical ballets. Think Sugar Plum Fairy in “The Nutcracker,” and it evokes the romance and whimsical world of classic ballet.
  • The “American” Tutu: A little more contemporary and minimalist, this style is less about traditionalism and more about creating a modern aesthetic. You’ll often see it in more athletic or dramatic ballets. I love it because it still maintains elegance while having a stronger feel.
  • The Contemporary Tutu: A more avant-garde and abstract tutu with lots of interesting textures and shapes, defying the typical romantic silhouette. This style reflects the exploration of movement in contemporary dance and allows choreographers to create bold, edgy statements.

Anyway, back to Dundurn. For my Tutu Tuesday outfit, I've decided to embrace my Saskatchewan roots. Think a classic romantic tutu in soft pale pink. It’s flowy, romantic, and screams “Canadian countryside.” I'm pairing it with my trusty pointe shoes (because who can resist a good pair of pointe shoes?), and adding a touch of plaid, with a comfy, cozy plaid button-up shirt, to pay homage to our beloved prairie style. Let's be honest, I mean, is there a more quintessentially Canadian style than plaid?

Dundurn, Saskatchewan may be small town Canada, but let me tell you, it’s packed with charm and heart. The community here supports its arts and culture, and everyone seems to know each other, even from across the street. It’s a reminder that dance is for everyone, everywhere, and that even in small towns, we can make magic with a pair of pointe shoes and a little bit of tulle.

If you ever find yourself in Saskatchewan, make sure to drop in on Dundurn, especially if you're a dance fan. There's no better way to enjoy Tutu Tuesday than in a town that truly embraces the power of art and the spirit of Canada!

I hope this blog post inspired you to embrace your own unique style, no matter where you are in the world. Don't be afraid to add your personal flair, whether it's a splash of colour, a vintage scarf, or a good dose of plaid!

Now go out there and dance like nobody's watching, especially if you happen to be in Dundurn! Happy Tutu Tuesday!

Stay tuned for next week’s blog post! Let me know what you want to hear about, or what inspires you.

Until next time!
