Tutu Tuesday in Inukjuak, Quebec: A Fashionable Adventure in the Arctic

Bonjour from Inukjuak, Quebec! This tiny Arctic town, nestled on the shores of Hudson Bay, might not be the first place you’d think of for a fashion adventure, but trust me, you'd be surprised. I’m here for a very special reason, though, to share the joy of #tututuesday in the heart of Inuit Nunangat.

Today, I’m stepping out of my usual pointe shoes and into a whole new world of fashion – the world of tutus! And not just any tutus, but the iconic **layered Romantic tutus** that you see gracing the stage in classical ballets. Think big, billowy tulle, with those charming and perfectly executed tiers. In the harsh and icy conditions of the Arctic, a tutu might not seem practical, but it’s become a beacon of colour and joy. It’s a bold statement, a celebration of the unique beauty and spirit of Inukjuak.

We started our #tututuesday adventure at the community centre. You’d think that in a town like Inukjuak, where life can be pretty simple, tutus would be met with raised eyebrows. But nope, they were met with laughter and delighted giggles from kids who had never seen anything like them before! As I pulled on my tutu, a **classic four-layered tutu in shimmering silver**, a group of children gathered, their eyes wide with wonder. A little girl, barely five, came up to me, her face a canvas of wonder, “Is that for dancing, aunty?” she asked, eyes shining brighter than the newly fallen snow.

The magic of ballet, even a tiny snippet, can spark that kind of joy. Even here in Inukjuak, a place so far away from the grand ballet houses of Montreal, Ottawa, or Toronto, the passion for dance burns just as brightly. We had an impromptu performance session in the community hall, and you’d be amazed by the incredible talent these kids have, dancing with their feet grounded in this frozen landscape. Some wore brightly coloured winter jackets over their tutus, and the children used their Inuit throat singing techniques, which, I’m learning, are quite the complex musical art.

This #tututuesday journey was about more than just the beautiful dance costumes – it was about sharing my passion for ballet with this remote and culturally rich community, about showing that even in the harshest conditions, beauty and art can thrive. We ended our day with hot chocolate, and the stories we shared echoed through the icy streets. Stories of dancing snowflakes, polar bear pirouettes, and a small town that brought ballet into the heart of its people. It reminded me of something a young Inuit dancer told me. “Ballet makes our community feel less alone”. A beautiful, powerful message.

This #tututuesday was all about spreading some joy in Inukjuak and bringing a little piece of the vibrant world of ballet to this breathtaking, unique town. And as I sit here, writing this blog entry with the Northern Lights illuminating the sky, I realize that my journey to Inukjuak has been so much more than just a #tututuesday adventure, it has been a journey of self-discovery and cultural exchange.

This week, I've seen how ballet can connect communities and inspire new perspectives on life. From the delicate tulle to the rhythmic heartbeat of Inuit throat singing, every moment has been an adventure in cultural expression, and that's a feeling that's worth celebrating, no matter what part of the world you're in.

So, #tututuesday, in its simplest form, is not just about dancing in a tulle skirt – it’s a symbol of sharing joy, a way to bring smiles and beauty to every corner of the world. As we end our time in Inukjuak, I leave with a heart filled with gratitude and the beautiful memories of a #tututuesday that will be etched in my mind for years to come.

**Inukjuak, Quebec. #tututuesday, forever!**

Here are a few of my favourite #tututuesday highlights:

  • The wonder on the faces of the children, especially when they saw me in the **layered Romantic tutu**.
  • Learning about the intricate artistry of Inuit throat singing and its deep connection to Inuit culture.
  • Dancing with the locals in the community centre and creating new connections over a shared passion for ballet.
  • The contrast of the billowing tulle against the stark beauty of the Arctic landscape. The **billowing** Romantic tutu brought an interesting and unexpected element of artistry.
  • Experiencing the breathtaking northern lights - what better way to finish off an inspiring #tututuesday, than a ballet performance under a curtain of aurora borealis.

#tututuesday will definitely continue – stay tuned for more stories and adventures from the dance floor!
