Tutu Tuesday in St-Pierre-Jolys, Manitoba: A Whirlwind of Tulle and Tradition

It's Tuesday, which means it's time to break out the tulle! And where better to celebrate Tutu Tuesday than in the heart of the prairies, St-Pierre-Jolys, Manitoba? Known for its charming French heritage and welcoming atmosphere, this little town holds a special place in my heart - and that's not just because of the amazing homemade pâtisserie!

For you non-dancers out there, a Tutu Tuesday is a day where you embrace your inner ballerina and sport a tutu, no matter the occasion. It's a whimsical celebration of dance, a bit of unadulterated fun, and a chance to channel your inner grace (or at least your inner twirl).

Today's Tutu Tuesday took me on a journey through the streets of St-Pierre-Jolys. It started with a delicious breakfast at La Croissanterie, where I was lucky enough to snag the last chocolate croissant. They’re known for their incredible pastries – I highly recommend their pecan tarts - they're simply heavenly! With my sugar rush and a fresh cup of joe, I was ready to take on the day. And let me tell you, sporting a tutu certainly puts a pep in your step!

First up was a visit to the St-Pierre-Jolys museum. They have a collection of historical artifacts that trace back to the area’s French roots and Early Canadian history, which, of course, had to include a display of 19th-century dance costumes. Seeing these early tutus made me realize the long history of this garment, from its grand, romantic beginnings to the contemporary variations we see today.

Then it was time for some shopping! Now, you can't talk about fashion without mentioning the local boutiques, and St-Pierre-Jolys doesn't disappoint! A local store, L'Artisanerie, had a whole rack of ballet-inspired clothing and accessories. I found the cutest little pastel-colored tulle skirt - perfect for adding a bit of dance-inspired flair to my everyday look.

Speaking of dance, did you know that there is a thriving ballet community in Canada? St-Pierre-Jolys has its very own school called Ballet Centre du Val, offering training to young dancers. I dropped in for a quick chat with the director, Madame Dubois. She explained the importance of exposing children to ballet from a young age. Not just for the physical development, but also for building confidence and fostering an appreciation of the arts. She’s been teaching for over 30 years! I've been dancing since I was 6 so I understand the amazing benefits dance brings!

But back to our tutu adventures! Next stop: the municipal park for a little picnic. With a tutu in tow, a picnic is almost a requirement. And who can resist the joy of spreading out a blanket, enjoying the fresh air and twirling with a bit of music from my phone? I grabbed some homemade chèvre cheese, fresh baked bread, and juicy strawberries at the local farmers market.

I met some fellow tutu enthusiasts – local ladies with tutus of all colors! We reminisced about our childhood ballet classes and giggled over the inevitable moments where the tutu got caught in the breeze (not the best look! ). One woman mentioned an upcoming ballet production at the nearby high school. I couldn’t resist and bought a ticket for next month!

As the sun began to set, casting a golden hue over St-Pierre-Jolys, I made my way to a small bistro, Café des Arts. This charming café is a favorite among local artists, musicians and dancers, creating a lively and inviting atmosphere. They also host open mic nights where everyone’s invited! I finished off my day with a warm cup of tea and some scrumptious petit fours, admiring the ballet-themed art pieces decorating the walls.

As the night wrapped up and the Tutu Tuesday glow faded away, I felt a renewed appreciation for this beautiful part of Manitoba, St-Pierre-Jolys. There is so much beauty to be discovered, not only in the scenic landscape but in the community spirit.

So, if you find yourself in St-Pierre-Jolys on a Tuesday, consider bringing your tutu! It might be just the little boost you need to experience the magic of this town, even if you’ve never taken ballet classes. You never know, maybe you'll discover a hidden love for dance – or at least a new appreciation for the whimsical nature of tutus!
