Tutu Tuesday in Upton, Quebec: A Whirlwind of Twirling and Tradition

Hey everyone! It's your girl, Chloe, back with another #tututuesday post, straight from the heart of charming Upton, Quebec. And oh boy, are we in for a treat! This picturesque town has more charm than a well-worn pointe shoe, and a history that's practically written in ballet shoes. It's hard to believe, but the graceful art of ballet is woven into the fabric of Canadian culture, and nowhere is that more evident than right here in Upton, just a hop, skip, and a pirouette from the urban ballet scene of Montreal.

As a dancer with a deep love for the history of ballet, I find it truly heartwarming to see the passion for this art form echo in the most unexpected places. In a town known for its cozy charm, history and delicious maple treats, you’d be surprised to discover how many tutus are taking centre stage! Whether it’s a grand, multi-layered tulle confection fit for a Swan Queen, a demure, Romantic-era number in soft shades of peach or lavender, or even a playful, sassy contemporary tutu in bold colours and modern shapes, these tutus tell stories about our connection to ballet.

So, what’s Tutu Tuesday all about? Well, it’s a day dedicated to celebrating the exquisite craftsmanship of these dancewear icons, and paying homage to the rich tradition of ballet in Canada. Each Tuesday, a local resident selects their most treasured tutu – whether a family heirloom passed down for generations or a recent acquisition from a renowned atelier. The spotlight falls on that tutu, bringing its story to life, and sharing its historical and emotional significance.

  • This week's highlight was a majestic white tulle tutu with an embroidered bodice. The owner, a vibrant eighty-year-old named Madeleine, shared her captivating tale of its origins – it was a treasured garment passed down from her grandmother, a prima ballerina who graced the stages of Montreal during the early 20th century. Imagine, this graceful, ethereal garment had seen the rise and fall of ballet eras, witnessed the evolving styles from the grandeur of the Russian Imperial era to the grace and fluidity of contemporary ballet! Each delicate stitch, each silken layer whispered a tale of enduring passion for the art.
  • Another beautiful creation I encountered was a stunning Romantic-era tutu with delicate layers of pale lavender and peach tulle. The owner, a passionate young ballerina named Beatrice, told me her story – this wasn’t just a garment for her, but a tangible link to the early days of ballet in Quebec. She plans to don it for a special performance at the local theatre in a new interpretation of the ballet "Giselle", which celebrates its rich history through this special choreography and exquisite costumes.

Tutu Tuesday isn't just a celebration of beautiful attire, it’s a community event that breathes new life into the cultural heritage of Upton. People of all ages gather, sharing stories and insights on ballet, connecting through the language of dance, and rekindling their passion for this enduring art form. Whether you’re a seasoned ballet buff or just a curious visitor, this initiative invites you to experience ballet in its most engaging, intimate, and heartwarming form – right in the heart of this vibrant Quebecois town. You know I'll be back for Tutu Tuesday in Upton, each week capturing new moments of wonder and sharing them with you! Don't forget to follow along! I’m excited to see you in Upton and be a part of the Tutu Tuesday scene. Until next week! #TutuTuesday #UptonQuebec #Canada
