Tutu Tuesday in Clyde River, Nunavut: Bringing Ballet to the Arctic! #tututuesday Okay, you guys, brace yourselves! I know what you're thinking – Tutu Tuesday in Clyde River? In Nunavut?! Is she crazy?! 😜 Hear me out, because it was seriously the coolest thing! My journey began in the bustling ballet studios of Toronto, where tutus and plies were my daily bread. But I knew I wanted to see more of our beautiful country. So, when I got the opportunity to join a cultural exchange program to the Arctic, I was so stoked! We landed in Clyde River, a small Inuit community with breathtaking scenery and friendly locals. You know what the craziest part was? This incredible group of young people, inspired by their rich traditions and artistry, asked if I could teach them a bit about ballet! They were all eager to try – the energy was electrifying. My initial plan was to teach basic technique, but as we worked, we decided to put together a special dance piece showcasing Inuit culture and the beauty of the North. Think graceful movements combined with traditional stories and Inuit drum music – magic, pure magic! And of course, I couldn't have a dance class in Clyde River without incorporating the spirit of Tutu Tuesday. Now, imagine this: we’re in a community hall with bright turquoise walls. The room is buzzing with excitement, and everyone's wearing tutus in all sorts of colours! The guys even jumped in the fun wearing traditional clothing, complete with sealskin boots! We worked with different tutu styles to showcase the different aspects of dance: • The **romantic tutus**, flowing and light, perfectly captured the delicate and ethereal nature of Inuit stories. • The **classic tutu**, with its tight-fitting bodice and structured layers, embodied the strength and resilience of the Inuit people. • Then there was the **modern tutu**, the modern adaptation that reflects the changing times and challenges of the Inuit culture in a contemporary style. You guys, the best part was seeing the pride in these young dancers’ eyes. It wasn’t just about mastering steps or hitting the perfect pirouette – it was about them embracing the beauty of ballet while incorporating their own unique identity. That evening, we presented the dance for the community. As the final notes faded and the audience erupted in applause, I knew I'd experienced something truly special. Bringing ballet to the Arctic was more than just sharing a passion. It was about bridging cultures, breaking down barriers, and recognizing the universality of dance. So, yeah, I guess you could say I’m pretty stoked about Tutu Tuesday! We might be far from the bright lights of the big city, but the magic of ballet can shine just as bright in Clyde River. ✨ #tututuesday #balletcanada
