Tutu Tuesday in Eltham: A Whirlwind of Frills and Flourishes

So, itā€™s Tutu Tuesday, and Iā€™m buzzing with excitement! Eltham, my little slice of suburban London, has been transformed into a tutu haven. Itā€™s a day for all things fluffy, frothy, and full of graceful swishes.

Letā€™s get this straight ā€“ tutu Tuesday is about celebrating the tutu, in all its magnificent glory. Not the flimsy, wispy, ā€œlook-at-me-Iā€™m-a-ballerina-wannabeā€ kind. We're talking the iconic, voluminous, showstopping masterpieces, the ones that truly make a statement. Iā€™m talking tutu-ing it up, with confidence, flair, and a generous dose of glitz.

Here in Eltham, itā€™s not just about the dancers. Weā€™ve got a real community spirit going on. Everyone wants to get involved, from toddlers tottering in their frilly pink tutus to grannies sporting those fabulous full-skirted versions in the most glorious shade of magenta you've ever seen.

What does Eltham wear on a Tutu Tuesday? Well, there's a vast array of styles:

  • The Romantic Tulle Tutu: Think soft layers of tulle cascading down, reminiscent of those delicate ballerina dreams. Perfect for waltzes and whimsical twirls.
  • The Classical Tulle Tutu: A show-stopping statement with its structured tiers of tulle, usually a shorter, poofy affair that adds a dramatic element to any movement.
  • The Modern Tutu: Forget the frills and fancy layers, this style shrieks modern dance and contemporary energy. Made of more stretchy materials, often with funky geometric shapes.
  • The Statement Tutu: Go bold and extravagant! I spotted some daring tutus adorned with dazzling jewels, flamboyant feathers, and intricate beadwork. Pure theatre.
  • The Casual Tutu: Not everyone's into all that fuss, and that's fine! A simple cotton tutu with a playful t-shirt, jeans, and even Converse trainers is just as charming.

Today, the Eltham Market Square has been converted into a haven for all things Tutu. There were dance workshops where children of all ages learned to spin and twirl (and maybe even attempted a couple of pliĆ©s). There were face painting booths where kids got their faces decked out in tutus and floral garlands, creating a kaleidoscope of color. And donā€™t even get me started on the delicious food stalls: tutu-inspired cupcakes with pastel frosting and little ballerina sprinkles, strawberry lemonade with delicate tutu-shaped straws, and mini pizza dough balls with the cutest tutu sprinklesā€¦ pure culinary genius!

The atmosphere in Eltham today has been absolutely electric. You could sense the sheer joy of dressing up and letting your inner dancer shine. And honestly, itā€™s inspiring. Whether itā€™s a tutu thatā€™s a full-on theatrical masterpiece or one that adds a whimsical twist to an ordinary outfit, everyone feels confident, playful, and ready to twirl.

One of the highlights of the day was the Tutu Fashion Show, a joyous showcase of some of Eltham's most creative and talented tutu wearers. I even managed to snap a picture with Miss Eltham Tutu 2023. Letā€™s just say it was a full-on frilly explosion.

This Tutu Tuesday has been a glorious celebration of creativity, fun, and self-expression. So, take a bow, Eltham! Youā€™ve given a brand new meaning to "dress to impress". And for those of you in other parts of London (and beyond) who want to jump on this tutu bandwagon ā€“ I'm all for it. Go wild, embrace your inner tutu, and get ready to spin your heart out! #tututuesday.
