Islington's Tutu Tuesday: A Celebration of Dance and Style

So, fellow dance enthusiasts and fashion aficionados, gather round because it’s time to talk about the glorious spectacle that is Tutu Tuesday in Islington! Let's dive into the vibrant heart of North London, where dance and fashion collide in a whirlwind of tulle and grace. This monthly ritual has become a much-loved tradition, attracting a fascinating blend of ballet dancers, aspiring ballerinas, and stylish souls who simply adore the whimsical allure of a well-constructed tutu. From classic Romantic styles to avant-garde contemporary interpretations, the spectrum of tutus on display is simply breathtaking.

It's not just about tutus, of course. Tutu Tuesday is a celebration of dance in its entirety. You'll find street dancers, contemporary choreographers, and ballet enthusiasts all converging, exchanging stories, and inspiring each other. It's a joyous explosion of creative energy. The streets of Islington are transformed into a canvas of movement and artistry.

Let me share a little bit about myself, so you know who's behind the keyboard! My name is Anya, and I'm a freelance ballerina, working mainly with smaller theatre groups and schools. In my spare time, I write about dance, fashion, and food - naturally all linked together, in my view - for a selection of blogs. Oh, and of course, my passion lies in finding those special and individual tutus for my shows.

The essence of Tutu Tuesday lies in the fact that it's about making dance accessible. It’s not a high-brow, elitist event; it’s about getting people together, sharing their love for movement, and creating a sense of community. From casual observers to seasoned dancers, Tutu Tuesday is for everyone.

Imagine a picturesque afternoon, with the sun gently filtering through the canopy of Islington's ancient trees, casting dappled shadows on the pavement. I'm standing in Angel, ready to begin my exploration of Tutu Tuesday, clutching my trusty DSLR camera. As I walk towards Upper Street, a scene unfolds that makes my heart soar. Tutus in all their glorious forms flutter down the street – romantic wispy ones, dramatic and extravagant multi-layered ones and contemporary ones, so simple they seem to just float on air. And the styles are endless, the choice depends entirely on the mood you’re wanting to create.

  • The **Romantic tutu** is a classic, typically crafted from multiple layers of tulle and often adorned with delicate embellishments like sequins, flowers, or feathers. Think sweeping tutus in soft pastel hues – pink, pale blue, lilac, and cream – evoking a timeless sense of romance and elegance. They often feature a bodice that creates the effect of an off the shoulder neckline, perfect for those elegant ballerina looks.
  • The **Neo-Romantic tutu**, inspired by the 20th-century Ballet Russe era, adds a contemporary twist to the romantic ideal. Expect sleek lines, subtle asymmetries, and bold colours to break the conventional, but they still manage to hold that same essence of elegance and romanticism.
  • The **Classical tutu** takes centre stage. A testament to the strict tradition of classical ballet, they showcase a sleek and streamlined design. Typically short and featuring a fitted bodice, these tutus highlight the dancer’s graceful movements, often seen in traditional ballets.
  • For the more adventurous, there are **contemporary tutus**, often eschewing the traditional layers for sleek lines and minimal detailing. These pieces allow for greater freedom of movement, lending themselves perfectly to contemporary choreography. Fabrics might include, but aren't restricted to, silk, jersey and stretch netting, in daring, bold colours that stand out in the crowd. These tutus push the boundaries of traditional ballet aesthetics.
  • And who could forget **the character tutu**, designed for specific ballets? It adds to the narrative and is a visual feast in itself. You see the character being brought to life – the mischief of fairies, the sadness of the little mermaid and the mischievousness of the mischievous sprite, for instance, through a wide range of different fabrics, textures, shapes, colours and embellishments. The creativity here knows no bounds, though it often does require hours and hours of painstaking hand work!

The energy on Upper Street is truly infectious. Laughter echoes, cameras flash, and conversations blossom about dance routines, training, and favourite styles of tutu. It’s not uncommon to hear a snippet of conversation, in passing, about the history of dance or the latest production from The Royal Ballet, or to see a group of friends, each in a magnificent tutu, rehearsing a new piece they’ve put together, before continuing on to the actual event later in the evening.

I've been documenting Tutu Tuesday with my camera for a few years, and it's truly inspiring to see the evolution of style, the diversity of expressions, and the shared joy of dance in all its glory. It’s a reminder that dance transcends boundaries and unites people in the pursuit of beauty and movement. On that note, my dear reader, as always I invite you to join me at Tutu Tuesday, Islington’s beautiful monthly dance celebration. It's truly an afternoon of sheer delightful whimsy, one where tutu dreams take flight!
