Not just any Tuesday, mind you, but Tutu Tuesday, a delightful celebration of all things ballet, hosted by the brilliant Hounslow Dance Studio. It was a vibrant tableau of tutus, every colour imaginable, from the classic ivory to electric pinks, sassy blacks and even a daring splash of cerulean blue. My eyes widened at the sight of a little girl with a perfectly puffed up, cotton candy pink tutu, her smile beaming brighter than the sun. A group of teens in sleek, black tutus were practicing their leaps with graceful abandon, and a gaggle of mums in the "mum-friendly" tutu-inspired leggings, a delightful fusion of practical and chic. What is Tutu Tuesday? It all started as a local initiative by Hounslow Dance Studio, a place where budding dancers from across West London have honed their skills and fuelled their passion for ballet. “We wanted to make dance more accessible and inclusive,” Sarah, the owner of the studio explained, “and there’s nothing quite as powerful as a tutu to inspire a love of ballet. The goal was to spark a conversation and a bit of joy.” They definitely hit the mark. Tutu Styles That Stole The Show My own heart did a little pirouette when I saw a display of handmade tutus in the shop windows. It was beautiful to watch toddlers trying to get the hang of a "grande jeté" and see seasoned dancers inspiring young minds. A Splash of Tutu Culture There was a palpable energy on the streets of Hounslow as people took selfies with the "Tutu Wall," an installation adorned with tutus, a clever play on Instagram culture. Even the local bakery joined the fun with "Tutu-themed" cupcakes and “The Dancing Biscuit,” a delightful take on the classic “Viennese Whistle.” The "Tutu Fashion Show" showcased a mix of vintage and contemporary tutus, each one with its own story to tell.
