Tutu Tuesday in Ashton: A whirl of tulle and a touch of whimsy

Ashton, my lovely little town, has a certain charm that is often overlooked. But let me tell you, when it comes to #tututuesday, Ashton's streets come alive with a dazzling array of tulle, and it's not to be missed! It's a day where ballerinas and aspiring dancers (like myself!), along with anyone with a twinkle in their eye and a love for a touch of whimsical fashion, embrace the tutus! It's a riot of colour, a symphony of flounce, and a truly unique way to brighten up an otherwise ordinary Tuesday.

It all started, as most brilliant things do, with a shared love of the dance. We, a bunch of ballerinas (ranging from seasoned professionals to hopeful beginners) decided to dedicate Tuesdays to honouring the iconic tutu - a staple of our world and a timeless symbol of elegance, grace and artistry.

We gathered on the cobblestones outside the Ashton Theatre (which by the way, has a hidden gem of a cafe that serves the best clotted cream teas - you HAVE to try it!), our tutus flowing like rivers of silk and tulle. From classic romantic tutus, their graceful lines accentuating the ethereal nature of the ballerina, to the more dramatic contemporary designs that exude a sense of power and modern grace. We had them all: tutus of every colour imaginable, from the traditional white to vibrant hues of sapphire blue, fiery red and shimmering emerald.

But Tutu Tuesday isn't just about the ballerina. This vibrant celebration of the tutu transcends the dance floor and spills into everyday life, attracting men and women, young and old. Our very own shop assistant in the local bakery donned a tutu, her apron somehow managing to hold the added tulle with delightful charm, and the postman, ever-so-stoic, sported a whimsical, pink tulle scarf. It seems everyone in Ashton wanted to add a touch of tutu magic to their Tuesday.

Let me tell you, the sight is a treat! This little town transforms into a magical wonderland of fluttering tulle and bright smiles. People who normally wouldn't even consider venturing out on a Tuesday are drawn to the contagious joy, the sheer delight of embracing the playful, unexpected aspect of the tutu. We dance and laugh, the tulle swirling like clouds as we celebrate not just the beauty of dance but also the power of a little bit of whimsy and a whole lot of love for all things tutu.

And it's not just about the spectacle! There's a real sense of community that thrives on this day. It breaks down barriers, bringing people together from all walks of life in a shared celebration of joy and individuality. We connect, chat, share stories, and find a common ground in the magic of the tutu. I even saw two grandmas comparing tutu patterns and sharing stories about their days at the ballet. The magic of tutu transcends age!

So if you ever find yourself in Ashton on a Tuesday, be prepared! You might just find yourself swept up in a whirlwind of tutus and smiles. The infectious joy is hard to resist. But fair warning, a Tutu Tuesday experience will undoubtedly make your day - and might just have you longing for a tutu of your own!

Here are a few highlights from Ashton’s tutu-tastic Tuesday:

  • Our very own local artist, Amelia, showcased a collection of paintings inspired by ballerinas and tutus. These beautiful creations captured the movement and emotion of dance, while also embracing a modern interpretation of the tutu.
  • The Ashton Youth Theatre group presented a selection of excerpts from classic ballet pieces. Their enthusiasm was contagious and they even got the whole square dancing with a spirited rendition of 'Waltzing Matilda', all decked out in their finest tutus!
  • The Ashton bakery delighted our sweet tooth with its new “Tutu-licious” cupcake line. There were mini tutus crafted from pink fondant and adorned with edible pearls, mini cakes that resembled delicate ballerina slippers, and of course, a cupcake with a real tulle frill crowning the icing. Oh, and don't even get me started on the “Tutu Time” tea – delicious!
  • Our local fashion designer, James, gave a tutu-themed fashion show featuring some absolutely stunning designs, including a few bespoke tutu-inspired pieces made just for this special day! The audience were treated to a dazzling display of intricate tulle work, whimsical patterns and striking colour combinations, and let me tell you, they were quite the talk of the town!
