Tutu Tuesday in Worthing: A Whirlwind of Tutu Styles

Tutu Tuesday! It's that glorious day of the week when I, a ballet-obsessed, tutu-loving gal in my 20s, dust off my favourite tulle creations and get ready to twirl around town. This week, Worthing became my dance floor as I explored the diverse world of tutus and discovered that even a seemingly simple piece of dancewear can be so incredibly stylish!

I've been following the #TutTuesday trend for ages now. It's an absolute explosion of creative energy, celebrating the beauty and versatility of the tutu. Whether it's the classic, Romantic era tutu with its layered layers of tulle and graceful lines or a more modern, experimental design, there's something magical about a tutu. It instantly transforms your outfit and you into a ballerina, a magical creature, with the ability to unleash your inner dancer.

As I strolled along Worthing's bustling promenade, I was already turning heads! My tutu for the day, a sunshine-yellow, full-length romantic-style tutu from my own collection, caught the eye of everyone passing by, which really adds to the day's fun! This week, however, I was on the lookout for inspiration for future #TutTuesday outfits. I discovered some brilliant and surprisingly wearable ideas, and the best thing is that they were completely different to each other.

Firstly, I stopped in at the quirky little independent clothing store, "Threads and Tales". This place is a treasure trove for vintage fashion lovers. And thatā€™s where my Tutu Tuesday adventures began in earnest. I spotted this lovely young lady browsing the racks in a classic black, knee-length tutu layered over denim shorts. The effect was both feminine and casual chic!

For a classic romantic-style look, I love the timeless allure of the multi-layered tutu, cascading from the waist in a breathtaking cloud of tulle. However, there's no need to be confined to just the classic styles! Iā€™ve always felt tutus donā€™t have to be super long. For something shorter, the mini tutu is always great. This lady was showcasing that just perfectly in her tutu that stopped a few inches above the knee.

I couldnā€™t leave Threads and Tales without asking her if she wanted to chat about how sheā€™d created this awesome look. I also wanted to get some tutu tips as she definitely had the ā€œIā€™m just going to walk around like I own this town vibeā€.

She happily joined in on my tutu adventure, so we popped into The Cake Garden nearby to get a cup of coffee.

Her name was Millie and she revealed how her own look came about: She told me she was at a dance class the other night where sheā€™d seen a black tutu on one of the students, and it was a lightbulb moment. The moment she walked out of that studio she knew she had to create a real-life everyday look. And there she was. Absolutely rocking #tutuesday in a stylish way, so it wasnā€™t just a dancer-style tutu look. This is exactly what the #TutTuesday movement is all about, showing the variety in tulle.

Now, while the thought of combining denim and tulle might sound unusual at first, it works surprisingly well! Millieā€™s combination was definitely casual but still stylish. She wore her mini-tutu over boyfriend-style jeans. The key, she said, was choosing the right colours and textures. This particular mini-tutu was a beautiful and soft black, while her jeans had a subtle sheen. The two were well-suited to each other. The effect? The most amazing contrast with a touch of whimsy! I couldnā€™t believe that something so unexpected and so bold worked so well.

Our conversation soon moved on to Millie's styling tips for different occasions. Millie said:

  • "For a relaxed brunch date, go for a shorter tutu and pair it with a graphic T-shirt or a floral blouse. "
  • "For a night out on the town, I might choose a long tutu thatā€™s a different texture or one with more layers. You can add glamour to any tutu look with sparkly accessories!"
  • "And for something bolder, Iā€™ll create layers with different tutues in a rainbow of colours."

I think you'll be surprised at how a tutu can make a great evening outfit. All those layers of tulle actually make it really flattering. But you definitely want to make sure it's flowing.

But if Millie's outfit was about casual chic and how to style a tutu for an everyday look, we then moved onto a complete contrast. The next #TutTuesday look we discovered was in the art gallery next door.

It was the art-style tutu which I have to say was a bit different, but still beautiful, itā€™s just not something I would ever do! That being said, I did see how it can be styled beautifully! In a place like an art gallery it totally makes sense, as the space provides such a beautiful back drop, but outside this particular look I would not recommend wearing it. I have my reservations about it but I have to respect other peoples creative choices and let it shine on its own merit.

A woman was standing next to one of the exhibits - it was a huge canvas of splattered colours and some random marks which is apparently the new art style. I didnā€™t really get it but this is why I love art as it does not need to be ā€œgotā€! She had a huge white, layered tulle skirt with some random patterns splashed over the surface. I later found out from the art gallery owner that this woman, Anya, was an art student whoā€™d created this unique look herself. The tutu sheā€™d created wasn't the classic dancing type but it worked brilliantly, and not just because the art space it was created in.

The owner explained that the artist was experimenting with creating her own pieces, which really resonated with her love of the ballet, and of course, the tutu was the ultimate piece of dancewear, so the two seemed to blend beautifully for Anya. It is all in how it is presented and worn that matters. The fact Anya has been doing this look for some time now just goes to show how versatile tutus really are!

After some inspiration from Anya and Millie, I then walked past a group of young girls on the beach who were having a photo session wearing colorful and bright mini-tutues with long t-shirts and jeans. It was super fun to see so many people in Worthing enjoying the day, as the sun was shining! This style just shouted youthful exuberance with just a hint of sweet girlishness and thatā€™s always such fun!

And let's not forget about the ballet classes that are everywhere these days! My favourite Worthing class has got a studio space above a restaurant in Worthing Town Square, and every day I go past there are always people wearing tutus, usually with their dance bags and hair pulled back in buns, but this Tutu Tuesday there was a huge group wearing the most awesome fluffy tutus!

From romantic, romantic but short and art-style tutus to fluffy tutus worn by young dancers, it was amazing to witness the diversity of styles worn on this #TutTuesday!

You never know how the #TutTuesday trend will take hold, as it just keeps changing week by week.

But here are my three top #tutTuesday tips:

  • Always be yourself! There are so many different ways to rock a tutu, find your unique style and express your inner dancer.
  • Be bold, have fun, and don't be afraid to experiment! If you can imagine it you can create it. Tutus can make any outfit!
  • Donā€™t forget to document your #TutTuesday adventures on social media using the hashtag! Letā€™s show the world how fun and versatile this trend is!

Iā€™m excited for next Tuesday, Worthing is the place to be and #TutTuesday is the trend to watch.
