Croydon’s Got Tutu! A Celebration of Dance and Style

Ah, Croydon! The town that's never afraid to break the mould, the heart of South London with a spirit as vibrant as a well-executed pirouette. This Tuesday, however, it was all about Tutu Tuesday! And oh, how we loved it.

Now, I’m not talking about your standard ballerina’s tutu, the romantic, wispy, and utterly impractical ones we dancers adore. No, no. This was Tutu Tuesday Croydon style – bold, brave, and with a touch of the avant-garde. The streets of Croydon buzzed with a delightful energy, and everywhere I looked, there was a tulle explosion, a symphony of colour and style that had even the pigeons looking a tad impressed.

For Tutu Tuesday is a celebration of individuality, of taking something classic and giving it a modern twist. It’s about stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing the beauty of expression. In Croydon, this translates into everything from dazzlingly bold neon pink tutus paired with biker jackets, to delicate, feathered ones peeking out from under stylish trench coats, a statement piece to complete any outfit. Some women went full-on fairy tale princess, swirling in tiers of lace and sparkle, while others embraced a more contemporary look, draping a tutu as a daring skirt over a sharp business suit, a brilliant fusion of contrasts.

And it wasn’t just about the tutus, the whole town embraced the fun, shops had tutu-themed displays, cafes served tutu-inspired desserts (I highly recommend the 'Twirling Toffee Tart’ at the new Parisian bakery on High Street) and there was even a ‘Tutu Parade’ with local artists showcasing their creative interpretation of tutu wear. The event brought the town together – from teenagers strutting with confidence in neon pink, to grandmothers beaming in romantic white tutus with a few delicate feathers. Everyone felt like a star in this celebration of dance and style.

Of course, being a dancer, I had to have my own tutu moment. I chose a black and gold tutu with an edgy twist. It was bold, elegant, and reflected the dynamism of Croydon. Paired it with black leggings, a sleek top, and my trusty black ankle boots – a little rock 'n' roll flair never hurts, right?

The day felt like a whirlwind of creativity and a celebration of what makes Croydon so special: the spirit, the courage, and the joyful chaos of life itself. Croydon truly embraced its tutu moment, making it clear that it’s a place that’s always in the mood for a little fun and a lot of flair.

But What’s A Tutu Without The People?

There’s something truly inspiring about the sheer enthusiasm of Croydon locals. It wasn't just about the tutus; it was about people taking ownership of the idea, injecting their own personality into it, and, above all, enjoying themselves.

I met some fantastic people that day. There was a young fashion student who had sewn her own vibrant green tutu, complete with tiny LED lights, giving off a mesmerising effect as she twirled in the fading light. A group of friends even choreographed a flash mob, ending with a series of dramatic grand jetés, and they drew a crowd. It was incredible seeing their joy – pure and unadulterated, reminding us why it’s always important to let our inner dancer shine, no matter what.

And then there was Lily, a sweet girl with a gigantic smile, dressed head-to-toe in a shimmery, rainbow tulle, bouncing through the town square with boundless energy, teaching the toddlers nearby how to twirl. Lily, you’ve won the Tutu Tuesday award for pure infectious joy – my heart still sings with the memory of your giggles!

Tutu Tuesday: A Celebration For All

From fashion-forward enthusiasts to shy observers who dared to participate, Tutu Tuesday was an inclusive event. This town is like that - open, embracing the unconventional, and a true testament to the power of style. We all felt like a part of something special, something bigger than ourselves. Whether it was a vibrant pink tutu with matching fluffy earmuffs or a simple tutu with a subtle sprinkle of glitter, everyone who participated felt a sense of community, connection, and the sheer joy of expression.

Fashion Tip: Your Tutu, Your Way

As a dancer, I always love experimenting with tutu styles. This Tutu Tuesday in Croydon really ignited my fashion senses, giving me endless inspiration! But let’s be honest, tutus don’t always scream practicality, so finding the perfect balance between style and wearability can be a fun challenge. I’m all for exploring what a tutu can be, and Croydon taught me some fabulous tips:

  • Tutus Don’t Have To Be Pink (Or For Ballet, For That Matter): Break free! Don’t be afraid to go with unconventional colours or embrace alternative silhouettes. Think dramatic, asymmetric styles, sleek and minimalist designs, or playful tulle ponchos. This is a canvas for your creativity, and no rules need to apply.
  • Layer For Versatility: One of my favourite looks from the day was a stylish jumpsuit with a black tutu cascading from the waist. This is an amazing way to create a dramatic look that’s both elegant and wearable. For an edgier touch, throw on a leather jacket, for a softer touch, add a delicate cashmere scarf. The key is adapting the look to your style, embrace experimentation!
  • Don’t Be Afraid To Dress Down: There’s something very appealing about juxtaposing a tutu with a relaxed outfit. Throw one over a simple t-shirt and jeans for an effortless cool vibe. Add a touch of elegance by layering it with a sweater or blazer. It’s a fun way to play with different styles!
  • A Dash Of Bling Goes A Long Way: Sparkly sequins, dazzling beads, glittery details - all of it! Embrace the joy of sparkle! A little bit of bling goes a long way. Let it glimmer with confidence!
