Airdrie's Tutu Tuesday: A Celebration of All Things Tutus

Well, my fellow twirl enthusiasts, it’s Tuesday again, and you know what that means – Tutu Tuesday! This week, however, we're not just twirling in our usual dance studios or at the barre. We’re bringing the tulle to Airdrie!

You see, Airdrie, though known for its friendly locals and bustling town centre, has always held a special place in my heart for one very important reason: its community spirit. And it's that very spirit, that sense of "let's just do it" attitude, that I felt perfectly encapsulated in this week's Tutu Tuesday celebration.

For those not in the know, Tutu Tuesday is my weekly ode to the most magical garment in the dance world. It's a chance for ballerinas, aspiring dancers, and everyone in between to showcase their love for this iconic symbol of grace, artistry, and, let’s face it, sheer fabulousness. And Airdrie embraced it with open arms, or rather, with outstretched tulle.

We kicked off the festivities at the charming "The Courtyard", a haven for independent shops, where the delightful aroma of freshly baked pastries wafted through the air as if beckoning us to twirl in rhythm with the scent. Each store owner, I swear, had gone all out!

The independent fashion boutique, "Chic & Sassy", had displayed an array of adorable mini tutus perfect for the little ones, alongside some exquisite adult ones. Each was adorned with shimmering sequins and delicate lace, evoking dreams of grand ballets and enchanting evenings. One even featured an adorable little butterfly design that literally made me say "aww". Meanwhile, at the book shop "Bibliophile’s Paradise", we found the "The Nutcracker" story book on every table, nestled beside fluffy tutus in shades of sugar plum pink. They had a very unique display showcasing "the rise of the tutus" through the decades – from the grand, dramatic romantic tutus of the 19th century all the way to the bold and modern designs of the 21st century. They even had a cheeky little card with the title “Tutus & Tea – The perfect afternoon.” You guys, it was simply adorable!

But the real highlight, of course, was the "Tutu-walk" through Airdrie's cobbled main street. The entire town seemed to come alive, filled with the cheerful chatter of locals and the playful swish of tulle. As we strolled past shops decked out in tutu-inspired window displays, everyone, young and old, was smiling. And that, dear readers, is the magic of Tutu Tuesday.

Tutu Styles Seen on Tutu Tuesday:

  • The classic Romantic tutu – its layers of tulle flaring gracefully at the hip was seen on many dancers with its timeless elegance.
  • The contemporary tutu – modern and striking. Lots of intricate detailing. The designer ones were amazing. I felt quite mesmerised by their intricate lines and creative use of fabrics. I even saw a tutu made of shredded velvet. Genius! And one lovely woman was rocking a bright turquoise contemporary tutu that definitely stood out. So unique and fabulous.
  • The playful tutu – mini tutus were absolutely everywhere on the younger set. Think cute tulle skirts for tiny twirlers and, well, a few even donned their father's tuxedos and tied on mini tutus to boot. Very dapper and oh-so charming.
  • The “Tutu” inspired look – it was delightful to see Tutu Tuesday extended to the local’s day-to-day attire. You couldn't swing a cat (figuratively, of course) without seeing tutu-inspired designs - from floral printed tulle skirts worn with t-shirts to even some gorgeous lace ballerina-inspired frocks. Even some fellas rocked a playful “ tutu” vibe in a playful way – with some floral patterns mixed with jeans, or even tullle tie inserts – how dashing! This kind of creativity really put a big smile on my face.

Beyond the whimsical displays and festive atmosphere, the best part of this celebration was seeing how the spirit of dance touched so many. We saw children giggling in their miniature tutus, couples strolling hand in hand, and grandmas gracefully twirling in their tulle-inspired skirts. Everyone was in on the fun.

If you’re in need of a pick-me-up, a dose of fun, or a little twirling in your life, I urge you to head down to Airdrie and experience Tutu Tuesday. It’s truly magical.

So until next week, fellow twirlers, keep dancing! Don't forget to follow along on my social media platforms for more photos and fun behind the scenes insights. And most importantly, remember to always, always, always wear a tutu!
