Ashington’s Tutu Tuesday: A Whirlwind of Tutus and Tea

It’s Tuesday, and you know what that means – it’s #TutuTuesday! Now, before you think I’m talking about some sort of bizarre new dance craze, let me explain. #TutuTuesday is a movement, a passion, a love for all things tutu! It’s about expressing yourself, about celebrating the art of ballet, and about having a bit of fun with fashion. And this week, it’s taking over Ashington.

Yes, you heard me right. This small town in the North East of England is suddenly the epicentre of the tutu world. And let me tell you, it’s a sight to behold. As I walked through the town centre this morning, I saw tutu styles for every taste. From the classic romantic tutu, all whimsical and delicate, to the powerful, dramatic contemporary tutu, with its edgy lines and bold colours, Ashington’s Tutu Tuesday had it all.

One thing I couldn't help but notice was the sheer creativity on display. There was a lady sporting a bright pink tutu paired with a sharp, tailored jacket and statement jewellery. I even saw a man in a full tutu, his face painted with a warrior’s design, walking a proud dog in a matching tutu – it was hilarious and adorable! It seemed like everyone in Ashington was getting in on the tutu action, spreading the joy of dance and fashion.

But Tutu Tuesday wasn't just about showing off tutus – it was about bringing the community together. At the local coffee shop, I joined a group of women all wearing tutus over their jeans. We talked about everything from our favourite ballet pieces to the latest dance trends. It was like a little slice of Parisian cafe culture in Ashington! And you know what? They all had amazing stories about their tutus – one lady had a tutu she wore on her first date with her husband, while another had inherited hers from her grandmother, a former ballerina. There was a real sense of shared history and passion, making it clear that the tutu is much more than just a garment - it's a symbol of memories and dreams.

As the day progressed, I decided to give myself a little treat and head to the local tea room, which was also participating in the tutu celebrations. They had created a special Tutu Tuesday afternoon tea menu complete with a delightful selection of teas and tutu-inspired pastries. There was even a mini-performance by a group of local dancers, who performed a beautiful ballet piece amidst the elegant teacups. It was an absolute delight – a true representation of the artistic spirit of Ashington.

As the day came to an end, I could not help but be filled with a feeling of genuine joy. Tutu Tuesday had not only brought out the tutus but also the heart of Ashington. This small town in the North East had shown me the beauty of fashion as a tool of self-expression and community. As I make my way home, I’m already looking forward to next week’s #TutuTuesday, hoping that more towns will follow in Ashington's footsteps, spreading the tutu love. Because after all, who doesn't love a little bit of tutu magic in their lives?

Here are a few more things I loved about Ashington's Tutu Tuesday:

  • The range of tutus. I was amazed by the different styles people wore. It was so creative and fun! We saw everything from classic white to bold bright pink to funky, modern tutus. You really can’t go wrong when it comes to tutus!
  • The spirit of the town. Ashington truly embraced Tutu Tuesday and made it their own. The whole town was buzzing with a positive, energetic vibe. It felt like a real community celebration and a great reminder of how important it is to have fun.
  • The tutus worn by children. There was something particularly adorable about seeing children wearing tutus! It reminded me that ballet is a magical art that can inspire anyone at any age. They were all so full of joy and enthusiasm. Seeing the kids so excited and proud of their tutus really brought home how special Tutu Tuesday is.
  • The tutus and tea combo! A delicious cuppa paired with a tutu – it’s a winner combination.

I can't wait to see how #Tututuesday evolves! Maybe next week we’ll be seeing it spread to a whole new town – watch this space!
