Ramsgate: Tutu Tuesday Takes the Town by Storm
Oh, darlings, you know what day it is! It’s Tutu Tuesday in Ramsgate and I’m absolutely buzzing with excitement. I'm here with my trusty camera, ready to capture the glorious sartorial splendor that is sweeping this seaside town.
This is my third Tutu Tuesday outing and, I have to say, this time, it felt bigger and better than ever. Maybe it's the invigorating seaside air or maybe it's because tutus, those ethereal creations that can transform any mere mortal into a ballerina, just belong by the sea. They look fabulous billowing in the breeze! They add a touch of whimsy to any setting - and Ramsgate, with its quaint pubs, cobblestone streets and glorious cliff walks is definitely feeling the tutu magic.
And let's talk about those tutus! We saw it all on the High Street. There were the classic **Romantic** style tutus with their tiered layers of delicate tulle, radiating femininity and pure joy. And oh, the colours - from the paleest pinks to a shimmering aqua! They evoked dreamy fairytales and pirouettes on moonlit stages.
Then there were the more modern, **contemporary** tutus - a little more bold with geometric panels and asymmetrical designs. They screamed fierce confidence and brought a new wave of edginess to Tutu Tuesday, perfect for those who want to make a statement with their tulle.
But my absolute favourite was the unexpected: A quirky trio, rocking their own **'Street Tutu' style.** Their tutus were made from upcycled fabrics – brightly patterned textiles with a hint of neon, giving their tutus a fabulous punk vibe! Talk about a modern spin on a timeless classic!
The sheer joy, infectious laughter, and playful banter filled the air as everyone took turns twirling, dipping, and striking ballet poses - from tiny tots who just started their dance classes to grandma-aged ladies rocking tutus they probably owned for years! And they looked so darned good - they completely owned their confidence and joy, proving that age is just a number when you're having fun with a tutu.
Of course, no Tutu Tuesday celebration would be complete without a fabulous tea party. There I was, at a local tea room - the "Bohemian Beach Bistro" - surrounded by the most incredible collection of tutus, enjoying my favourite, freshly brewed Earl Grey and scones. The air was alive with tutu-related chatter, ranging from "My tutu has a secret pocket for my lipstick" to "Did you see that woman's fabulous tutu with those hand-painted butterflies on it?!"
For me, as a dancer and blogger, the real magic of Tutu Tuesday is how it transcends any age, profession, or even artistic background. Everyone, regardless of their personal style, finds their inner ballerina with a twirl or a twirl-and-dip - just the tiniest bit of ballerina-in-training. I witnessed a gentleman, his tutu adorned with sparkly pins and badges, happily attempting a *grand jeté*. It was hilarious! That is the power of Tutu Tuesday - to unleash your inner child and have fun with it, all in the spirit of fashion and community.
One of the absolute highlights of Tutu Tuesday happened just by chance as I was wandering the town square - I stumbled upon a flash mob performance! This energetic bunch of local dancers was putting on an improvised tutu-infused ballet flash mob in front of the beautiful Victorian clock tower. Imagine! It was pure joy - I nearly lost my mind with happiness! Even the pigeons seemed mesmerized by the graceful movements - the local "winged tutu warriors," as I've named them.
Now, this is just a taste of the pure fun and joy that Tutu Tuesday brought to Ramsgate. To those who haven't yet had the pleasure of participating in this celebration of twirling and tulle, I say this - You HAVE to give it a try. You’re bound to find yourself grinning ear to ear, channeling your inner ballerino and feeling extra-ordinary for just one delightful day.
