Pink Tutu Vienna: Post 402 - 15th January 2003 - Waltz me away, Vienna!

Dearest readers!

It's Wednesday, which means it's time for another post from your favourite tutu-wearing, pink-obsessed blogger. This week, I'm writing to you from Vienna! Yes, you heard right. The City of Music, of Sacher Torte, of Emperor Franz Josef - and, of course, the most delightful waltzes imaginable. It feels quite unreal to be here, taking in the magnificent architecture and breathing in the rich history that simply exudes from every cobblestone street. And as a ballet-mad soul, I can’t wait to share with you all the magnificent, twirly delights this city has in store.

Let's get into my adventures:

A Royal Arrival

I travelled to Vienna, as ever, in the most romantic way imaginable: by train! I boarded the train in Derbyshire, a whirlwind of suitcases and excitement, and settled into my compartment. It's a wonder how we even fit all these lovely tulle dresses in our suitcases - thank goodness for good packing skills! And naturally, my travelling attire was the ultimate tutu combination: a pale blush-coloured, hand-beaded number I got from that amazing vintage shop in Brighton.

During the journey, the landscape transitioned from rolling green hills to towering snowy peaks - so enchanting! It was truly the perfect start to a European adventure.

A Vienna Ballet Wonderland

As soon as I arrived at Vienna's impressive Hauptbahnhof, a glorious sight caught my eye - a giant tutu sculpted from bright pink fabric outside the main entrance! As I gazed at this amazing tribute to our favourite garment, a friendly Viennese gentleman, who I’m guessing was an artist or maybe a choreographer, overheard me gushing and explained that it’s a temporary installation by a local street art collective – who, he added, are known for their eccentric pink pieces! You just can't beat this kind of welcome, it already feels so excitingly tutu-tastic!

My first stop after I checked into my little hotel (with the most adorable frilly canopy bed!), was, of course, the Vienna State Opera. Now, I know what you’re thinking, and you’re right – it is incredibly extravagant! The gold leaf embellishments on the ceiling almost caused me to faint! But, my goodness, the performances – it’s a real testament to the incredible history and legacy of this grand old theatre. You feel so privileged to watch talented dancers interpreting timeless classics – there is truly nothing like it.

On Wednesday, I went to see Giselle – the passion and artistry were absolutely mesmerizing! I’ve seen countless variations of this ballet, but it was wonderful to experience it here. I felt quite overwhelmed by the sheer magnificence of it all, with the lush sets and stunning costumes - just exquisite! I bought myself a souvenir porcelain ballerina in a pale pink tutu to commemorate this momentous performance - it’s the perfect reminder to dream big, be bold, and dance with confidence.

Shopping like a True Ballerina

Speaking of dream-worthy dresses, what’s a ballerina’s visit to Vienna without a delightful spot of shopping?

There are countless antique shops overflowing with lace, silk, and beaded dresses, perfectly suited for any ballerinas’ dream wardrobe. I’ve already spotted a couple of dreamy options, which I simply must buy, for my personal collection - after all, I always think a good shopping trip deserves a little bit of ‘retail therapy’.

I also can't forget about the delightful Vienna Fashion Week which is underway here this week! It’s been fascinating to watch the latest collections hit the runway, to see how different designers are taking their inspiration from this fascinating city. So many layers of luxurious fabrics and swirling silhouettes – oh my! There’s definitely plenty of inspiration to take back to Derbyshire.

And speaking of inspiration, the famous Wienerwald (the Vienna Woods) are just breathtaking! Imagine all those fairy tale woodland settings! I can almost hear the magical rustling of the trees and imagine graceful, ethereal creatures flitting around them – so romantic and whimsical.

Vienna’s Ballet Heritage

Vienna has a rich and inspiring ballet history. I’ve been visiting local museums and libraries to find out all about the legendary Viennese dancers from the past! Did you know that La Sylphide by August Bournonville - which tells the magical story of a beautiful sylph captured by a handsome human - was originally created for the Vienna court theatre in the early 19th century!

Oh, and you absolutely can't visit Vienna without venturing to Schönbrunn Palace. The grandeur, the history, and the deliciousness of it all are just so enchanting! And it seems to be a popular spot for weddings too! I’ve been soaking up the beautiful music from talented young string players and witnessing so much heartfelt romance between brides and grooms. There is truly magic in the air in this magical location.

Final Thoughts…

So, dearest readers, this week has been full of tutu-tastic experiences! This is such a romantic and historical city, so full of inspiration, and of course, so wonderfully girly and full of sparkle!

Before I go, I want to ask a little favour - since this trip is part of my grand "Pink Tutu Worldwide Tour", I want to invite you all to join me! Next time you’re out and about, let's take on Vienna with the grace of ballerinas - and of course, let’s all make it pink!

Now, off I go to have some delicious Sacher Torte, and then it’s time to see if I can master a Viennese waltz or two! Until next Wednesday!

With a flurry of tutus and love,

Emma.
