#PinkTutuVienna - Post #481 - Wednesday 21st July, 2004

Oh, darlings! Can you believe it's already the 21st of July? The summer is flying by, just like a graceful ballerina pirouette!

This week I'm whisking you away to Vienna, the city of waltz and waltzing. My little heart just skipped a beat with joy when I stepped off the train yesterday. Vienna feels so romantic and sophisticated, just like a vintage tutu I discovered tucked away in an antique shop (you can't imagine how delighted I was - it was simply divine, with delicate lace and the softest pink silk you could imagine!)

I can't believe it's been a week since I shared my last post with you. Last week, I performed at the Royal Opera House, London, and my tutu shimmered like the London skyline at twilight! After the performance, I had the pleasure of dining with some fellow ballet dancers – we've got a fabulous group chat – a bit like a "Tutu Telegram" - you've just got to love how techy our world has become, especially when it means we can stay in touch no matter where we are in the world!

Oh, speaking of techy things... don't forget, darling, that this blog is updated every Wednesday, so make sure you bookmark www.pink-tutu.com!

Now, where were we? Yes, Vienna! Today is all about ballet in the beautiful Vienna State Opera. Can you even imagine, my dears? A performance of "Swan Lake" in one of the most impressive and beautiful opera houses in the world? Pure magic!

And the best part is? I got to explore Vienna a bit before the performance! My train ride was heavenly – oh, the sheer joy of looking out of the window as the rolling hills and lush green meadows whizzed by. I imagined myself twirling in my pink tutu on the breeze, just like a magical fairy!

I'm delighted to report that Vienna was utterly captivating. I explored the gorgeous Schönbrunn Palace, a veritable treasure trove of Baroque beauty. They have some incredible costumes on display! I'd never seen anything quite like the sheer volume of delicate beading and extravagant fabrics. It was a true spectacle. And then, there's the stunning gardens… picture a vast green space punctuated with elegant statues, sparkling fountains, and charming cafes, and you’ve got Schönbrunn. I indulged in the most delicious ice cream - pistachio, of course, because everything pink is the perfect colour in Vienna!

Now, darling, we need to talk about tutus! A little Viennese tutu history, if you please! This city is just brimming with stories and heritage, and tutus are no exception. Vienna has played a pivotal role in the history of dance and, in particular, the tutu itself! It all started with the ballet The Sylphides which debuted here back in 1909. The long, graceful tutu of the romantic era morphed into a new, shorter version, perfect for the more intricate and agile movements that characterised the ballets of the time. Just like a butterfly taking flight, this "new" tutu embodied a spirit of freedom and graceful expression!

You see, it's not just a piece of clothing; it's an emblem of a certain era, an expression of artistry, and a vessel for telling stories. Don't you find it fascinating?

Right then, darlings! I must be off to see a fashion show in Vienna. It's at a boutique I discovered nestled on a cobbled street, tucked away from the busy tourist hotspots. It's full of amazing vintage and one-of-a-kind dresses, with gorgeous colour palettes and exquisite detailing. I already have a dress in mind! Oh, it’s a dreamy pale pink and I simply cannot wait to add it to my wardrobe!

I shall tell you all about my dress find, and all the enchanting sights of Vienna, when I return from the fashion show. Now, you simply must take a moment to ponder Vienna's charm… and to plan a trip to the Vienna State Opera for a performance of Swan Lake. Remember, darlings, Vienna is waiting!

Much love and many twirls,

Emma x
