Vienna Waltz - Post #714 - 07th January 2009

Darling readers,

Happy Wednesday! It's that time of the week again, where I gather all my fabulous frocks, a pair of pristine pink ballet shoes, and spin you a tale from my whirlwind travels! This week, my feet have been tap-tapping on the cobblestone streets of Vienna, Austria. Oh, the music! The dancing! The cakes! And of course, the clothes! I simply cannot wait to spill the tea on my adventures.

Now, let's talk travel for a moment. I made the journey from Derbyshire, my little corner of England, to this charming city via the trusty Eurostar. Ah, the romance of a train journey, particularly through the beautiful countryside. I always try to book a window seat - nothing beats watching the scenery go by as you're swept away by a sense of adventure. Speaking of adventure, this past weekend saw me enjoying a spectacular horse-drawn carriage ride through the heart of Vienna. The rhythmic clip-clop of the hooves, the elegant swaying of the carriage, and the gentle breeze carrying the sweet scent of fresh pastries – absolute magic!

As always, I was sure to pack my wardrobe full of colourful concoctions, with plenty of tulle and sparkle – I wouldn't be caught dead in anything drab, particularly not in a city known for its grandeur and elegance! But of course, the pièce de résistance was my exquisite pink tutu. After all, a little twirl is always called for, wouldn't you agree? And wouldn't you know it, Vienna turned out to be a haven for dance enthusiasts just like me.

Firstly, the Vienna State Opera House is simply breathtaking. From the intricate architecture to the hushed silence just before the curtains rise, it's a sanctuary of elegance and beauty. Last night, I saw an absolutely stellar production of "Swan Lake", featuring breathtaking choreography and impeccable costumes. I could barely keep myself in my seat during the Act II "White Swan" pas de deux! It was a dance of sheer brilliance.

Of course, no visit to Vienna would be complete without indulging in the local culture, and by that, I mean the food. Honestly, it's no wonder Vienna is renowned for its pastries. I mean, how can one resist flaky, buttery strudel filled with delicious, seasonal fruit? I simply cannot resist a decadent slice of Sachertorte with a strong cup of coffee. The sheer decadence of the Viennese pastry scene has me considering extending my stay just a little longer.

But speaking of indulgence, I couldn't leave this city without exploring its wonderful shops and boutiques! From vintage stores crammed full of luxurious gowns to the modern boutiques showcasing the latest designs, I was truly in heaven. I've already managed to snag a fabulous velvet coat in a vibrant crimson and a pair of delicate earrings that are going to make me feel positively radiant! I also found some of the most beautiful ballet shoes you've ever seen. It was difficult to resist the temptation of adding another pair or two to my collection, but I'm a strong-willed woman - just ask anyone who's tried to keep me from wearing my tutu to the grocery store!

And, of course, I had to pay a visit to the Wiener Staatsoper, the renowned Vienna State Opera. It's truly a spectacle. I took a tour backstage and I was enthralled by the history of the opera house and its legendary ballerinas.

There’s a real sense of tradition here, something that resonates deeply with me. Ballet is woven into the very fabric of the city – it’s in the cobblestone streets, the classical music wafting from the cafes, even in the way people hold themselves.

My time in Vienna is coming to an end, but I can tell you with complete confidence that this city has captured my heart. The graceful architecture, the pulsating energy, the delightful food, and of course, the ballet - they've all conspired to make this a truly unforgettable trip. And as for the pink tutu – well, it's become a fixture in every single memory I've made here.

Don't forget, I post a new blog every Wednesday at www.pink-tutu.com - and in the meantime, remember – keep twirling, keep dreaming, and keep wearing pink tutus! Until next week, darling readers, I'll leave you with the delightful Vienna Waltz swirling through your imagination!

All the best,

Emma
