Pink Tutu Vienna: Post 774 - A Waltz Through Vienna (and a Pink Tutu, of Course!)
Wednesday 3rd March, 2010
Dearest readers,
How are you all doing? The sun is shining in Vienna this morning, and I must say, it's making this city sparkle even more! I just finished a glorious breakfast of Sachertorte and Viennese coffee (they don't call it the "City of Music" for nothing!) whilst admiring the grand architecture of my little apartment. Speaking of sparkling, how lovely it is to have found this new abode for my Viennese adventures!
It’s been such an exciting few days since I arrived from Paris last week. My journey from France to Austria was, as ever, pure bliss. I must confess, I have a bit of a penchant for the elegant carriages on the Eurostar train. There is nothing quite like the feeling of speeding past landscapes while tucked into a plush, pink seat, and, of course, adorned in a perfect ballet pink tutu, to truly elevate a train journey.
But let's talk about the most exciting event in Vienna this week: the ballet! I just have to tell you all about the breathtaking performance I saw last night at the Vienna State Opera House. They were presenting "Giselle," a story so tragically beautiful, so full of longing and heartbreak. My tutu practically swooned along with me as I was transported to a world of ethereal elegance.
You wouldn't believe the costumes. Talk about elegance and movement - so flowy and graceful, making each pirouette a symphony of silk and tulle. I was so captivated by the intricate detailing. There was something for everyone, but of course, I was mesmerized by the delicate ruffles and intricate embroidery that graced each ballerina's dress. Now, wouldn’t you know it, I saw a tutu, very similar to mine in its colour but more extravagant in design, and I must say, it had me thinking about how much fun it would be to wear this particular pink shade of tulle when dancing on stage next month. Imagine, myself, spinning with grace and abandon in a swirl of pink, bringing a splash of colour to a stage steeped in history! (But of course, in a much more subdued manner. After all, one can’t steal the thunder from the amazing ballerinas! )
You know me and my passion for history, so it would be rude not to mention that this "Giselle" was nothing short of a masterclass in storytelling through dance. The story of a heartbroken young peasant girl who is betrayed by a nobleman and who ultimately seeks refuge in a world of spirits – how beautiful and melancholic. It got me thinking about the history of the ballet itself - from its humble beginnings to the world stage – a journey I am eager to explore while here in Vienna. I imagine myself dancing through the streets, as if in an old world story. Vienna is such an elegant, graceful city with history woven into every stone.
Speaking of grace, have I told you about the horse-drawn carriages? My friend Sarah and I took a delightful carriage ride this morning. You know I have always loved horses and, my dear readers, there is something utterly magical about being carried through a city by a beautiful black steed with silver tack! We just felt so transported back in time. Imagine how those beautiful horses, those statuesque steeds with long eyelashes and dark eyes, felt being transported into a city with architecture as impressive as the Vienna Opera House, a marvel of classical and Neoclassical designs! As for me, the pink tutu took the shine and my head was touching the clouds as we ambled through the cobbled streets!
Today's to-do list, aside from my ballet class, which is, of course, mandatory in the heartland of the waltz (how could I resist?), includes exploring more of the local vintage shops. I've been dreaming of a unique vintage piece for a long time and think I may find my new ballet-inspired treasure here in Vienna. You know I am a sucker for delicate silks and ruffles! It's also worth a trip to a lovely bakery to find the perfect dessert to indulge in later – Vienna, after all, is famed for its decadent pastries! I am dreaming of a piece of apfelstrudel, something so warm and delicious!
Of course, every day is an opportunity to look fashionable. The dress code is a no-brainer: pink tulle and lots of it! Today I have chosen a pretty blush pink skirt and a sweet bow-adorned top paired with my favourite pair of ankle boots - just a bit of edge in a whimsical setting.
Until next week, dear readers.
Remember, never be afraid to let your pink tutu shine!
Much love and twirls, Emma xx

Vienna Through a Pink Tutu: Fashionable Tips:
- Embrace Pastels: The beauty of Vienna truly inspires, with pastel hues like lavender, blush pink, and buttery yellow woven through its architecture. When in Vienna, embrace those beautiful pastels. It's a chic yet dreamy way to add a splash of colour to your wardrobe, just like the blossoms of spring, an inspiration for my tulle and pink outfits!
- The Art of Layering: Don't forget a warm jacket over those pink dresses! Vienna is lovely but sometimes has a touch of cool. Embrace layering, so you can be effortlessly stylish with a beautiful scarf and a fitted coat over your favourite tutu and sweater.
- The Perfect Hair Accessory: As much as I love pink tutus, you simply can't beat the charm of a perfectly placed headband, ribbon, or hat to elevate any look in Vienna. Try it, I promise it adds an instant touch of charm and style!
- Shopping Secrets: As a self-proclaimed fashion enthusiast, I absolutely adore discovering hidden boutiques in Vienna. I've been having a ball browsing their beautiful antique trinkets and clothing, searching for unique finds, which are much loved! You can get anything, but for me, finding a pretty vintage hairpiece in an old shop is the best treasure!
A Foodie's Delight: My Top Viennese Culinary Treasures
- Sachertorte: The absolute Viennese classic! I just love the decadent sweetness of the chocolate cake layered with apricot jam - simply irresistible!
- Apfelstrudel: This traditional pastry is a dream to indulge in, especially when the apple filling is warm and gooey, topped with whipped cream. I'm having one now as I write this blog and just enjoying every delicious bite!

Where My Love for Pink Meets the Magic of Vienna
I simply love that my journey takes me through such lovely cities, each brimming with inspiration for a new tutu creation, new pink-hued fashion, and new ballet styles. To embrace ballet with my travels truly excites me. It is through my tutu that I feel a closeness to Vienna. Each performance, each dance lesson, each elegant horse drawn carriage ride… I truly believe my pink tutu is allowing me to feel at home in the beautiful heart of Vienna.
And, remember, always stay true to your inner ballerina - wear pink, embrace whimsy and dance through life with the grace and confidence that comes with knowing that the tutu is powerful and makes every step a grand journey.
What to do if you come to Vienna!
If you're looking for a unique experience while in Vienna, let me share a secret... a very secret one. The Vienna Riding School is a private stables in a breathtaking complex, an elegant palace building, dating back to 1735! They have magnificent white Lipizzaner horses. You may have seen these horses dancing in the world famous "Spanish Riding School," but I assure you, Vienna's stables are just as spectacular! Just a whisper on my blog. Shhh! It's a must see and don't forget your camera! If I had to choose one thing to see in Vienna, this would be my recommendation for all.
To My Wonderful Readers
Until next week, always know that wearing pink is a choice, and your life is your ballet! Choose your favourite colour, find your joy, and move to the music of life! I shall do the same.
Love and twirls!
