Hello my lovely tutu-loving friends!
This Wednesday finds me waltzing through the glorious streets of Vienna, the capital of Austria, and the place that is quite simply the embodiment of classical ballet! And you know me, I am utterly smitten by the beautiful dance, and this city seems to have its own special kind of ballet magic, wouldnāt you say?
I just arrived yesterday, and the first thing I did, of course, was head to the Opera House. Imagine my absolute delight ā a glorious building of swirling white, complete with graceful statues and dramatic steps ā itās just pure ballet fairytale, and my pink tutu was positively quivering with excitement!
Speaking of my pink tutu, it seems Viennaās pink palette isnāt too dissimilar to mine! From the charming cafes with their delicate pastel hues to the blossom-laden trees that grace the park, Vienna has this gorgeous feminine touch, like the city is dressed in a dreamy tulle skirt itself!
So far, Iāve explored the magnificent State Opera House, with its beautiful Baroque interior ā such stunning gold accents and chandeliers ā I felt like Iād stepped straight into the 18th century, and my pink tutu certainly wouldn't have been out of place in such elegance. They have a phenomenal ballet calendar, too, which makes my heart sing!
Tonight, however, I have tickets to the "Giselle" performance at the Vienna State Opera, and you can bet my trusty pink tutu will be ready for the big occasion! The music, the story, the elegance - sigh - itās simply divine! Itās almost worth leaving my trusty shopping bag, packed with my new finds from the fashion district, in the hotel, but I think my favourite embroidered vintage waistcoat and a delightful pair of blush-pink heels might just have to come along, if I can fit it all into my suitcase!
But before I slip into my āGiselleā finery and sashay off to the Opera, letās take a wander back in timeā¦
A Whirl Through Ballet History:
Oh, I just adore the history of ballet! I was thinking about it all morning whilst enjoying the view of Viennaās Imperial Palace, which I saw after arriving by train (donāt worry, it was comfy and a wonderfully efficient mode of transportation, perfect for a ballerina like myself!) - it's quite remarkable to realise how ballet and royal life are so interwoven in the rich tapestry of history!
It's a tradition that has its roots all the way back to the French Renaissance court, but it found a vibrant new life right here in Vienna during the 18th and 19th centuries. You can feel it everywhere, and it's impossible to miss!
The Dance of a Tutu:
I even found a museum that celebrates the history of the tutu! What a joy! Just like ballet, the evolution of the tutu is quite the story in itself, a beautiful progression through time, wouldnāt you say? From the cumbersome full-length skirts worn by ballerinas in the 16th century to the short, romantic tutus weāve grown to admire today, each period brought with it a new interpretation of what the perfect dancerās costume should look like.
In Vienna, youāll find it wasnāt just about elegance; there was a practicality, too, You canāt really waltz around in a billowing skirt, can you? The more the tutu changed, the lighter and easier it was for dancers to execute the technical brilliance that defined their era. So elegant, and so empowering!
Vienna, with its love of dance, embraced every evolution of the tutu, celebrating the artistry it showcased, from the early full skirts of the Italian opera to the breathtaking tutus made famous by Marie Taglioni and, later on, by the likes of Anna Pavlova! Imagine those magnificent ladies, grace personified, soaring across the stage. How inspiring!
And, of course, no discussion about the tutu would be complete without acknowledging the āPink Tutu.ā We all have one, even if itās hidden deep in our wardrobe!
Now, I'm about to make a mad dash back to the hotel for a little wardrobe change! "Giselle" beckons.
Stay tuned for more adventures in Vienna next Wednesday, my dears, where weāll explore more hidden treasures in this glorious city. Until then, letās spread some pink tutu joy!
P.S. I was thinking, wouldnāt a pink tutu be perfect with Viennaās signature waltz?
Until next time,
Emma
P.P.S.
And in case youāre wondering what else is on todayās programme, I spotted the delightful āDer Rosenkavalierā on the schedule! Itās such a heart-warming classic that's guaranteed to captivate and entertain even the most jaded ballet-lover! Itās going on the list for tomorrow!
