Vienna: Waltz me away! (Blog Post #1251)

Bonjour, my dearest tutu-loving friends! It's your favourite pink-clad ballerina, Emma, and this week I'm waltzing into the heart of Vienna, Austria!

This magnificent city is the embodiment of waltzing elegance, with its grand palaces, imperial history and of course, a culture deeply entwined with ballet.

As I stepped off the train (I adore the romanticism of travelling by train, don't you?), I was struck by the beautiful architecture and charming cafes. It's almost like a fairytale, only with better pastries! I've got a feeling this city will leave a lasting impression on my heart. And speaking of lasting impressions, I am quite literally, going to leave a pink one, with my tutu, of course!

A Tutusful History Lesson

Now, before I go on a tutu-induced frenzy, I've got a rather fascinating tidbit to share. Did you know, Vienna is considered the "birthplace of ballet"? You might be wondering, "Emma, what is ballet without the tutu?" Well, dear readers, the tutu actually originated in Vienna. Yep, in the 1830s, dancers ditched the cumbersome long skirts and adopted a light and airy skirt with the help of none other than the renowned ballet master, Jean Coralli! They call it the Romantic tutu - oh, the poetry!

As I wander the cobbled streets of Vienna, I imagine those elegant, long legged, tutu-clad ballerinas taking to the stage, their movements gracefully swirling and flowing like the very essence of Vienna itself.

My Vienna Fashion Fix

So, what's a ballet-loving fashionista to do in such a glamorous city? Well, of course, the first stop is The Vienna State Opera House! My favourite! I went on a tour and gasped at the grandeur of the building, the intricately decorated interior and, of course, the incredible history behind the stage. It's here where the legends were born, from Strauss to Mozart and ballet icons who paved the way for so many to come.

Speaking of grand spaces, I just had to pay a visit to Schönbrunn Palace with its magnificent gardens, fountains, and breathtaking views. It's no wonder the Habsburg monarchs chose this palace as their home, the architecture is truly remarkable and the gardens offer an endless parade of beauty.

Now, as you all know, my dear tutu enthusiasts, I am a staunch believer that ballet transcends the confines of the theatre. So naturally, my visit to Vienna included an elegant street performance by a local ballet company - they performed a waltzing piece that simply captured the spirit of Vienna to a tee.

After all that ballet bliss, I had to indulge in a little fashion therapy. Vienna is a true haven for vintage lovers and collectors like me! The boutiques in the inner city are stuffed with stylish gems from the past – imagine all the potential for a tutu pairing. And yes, I bought an extravagant new tutu, a vibrant shade of magenta and gold.
