It’s Wednesday, which means it's time for a brand new post from your favourite tutu-clad adventurer! This week, I’ve swapped my Derbyshire hills for the stunning, historical beauty of Vienna. Austria has long been a haven for ballerinas – from the grand palaces of the Habsburgs to the world-renowned Vienna State Opera – so naturally, this enchanting city called to me like a melody from a Strauss waltz.
As a proud and somewhat infamous wearer of pink tutus, I often get asked, “What's the story behind the tutus, Emma?” And while my love affair with tutus started in childhood, it's far more than just a fashion choice for me. It’s a symbol of the power, grace, and freedom of movement that dance embodies. I feel most myself, most alive, in a tutu – it’s like a magic spell that turns everyday moments into a beautiful ballet. And with each new city I visit, I find a new way to embrace the tutus’s charm!
The Waltz of the City: Arriving in Vienna
I made my way here in true Emma fashion, hopping aboard a beautiful old steam train – something I just can’t resist! The journey was filled with the sweet scent of vintage wood and the gentle clinking of carriages, transporting me back to a time of romantic travel and elegant style. The arrival at Vienna’s main station was magical; imagine soaring stained glass ceilings, ornate chandeliers, and a sense of excitement hanging heavy in the air – it felt like stepping straight into a grand ballet production!
A Grand Debut: The Vienna State Opera
My first night in Vienna was nothing short of spectacular! After a delicious lunch at a charming café overflowing with pastries (I just can’t resist a Viennese Sachertorte!), I found myself entering the grand Vienna State Opera House – a true icon of the world's ballet stage. Stepping into the vast, plush auditorium felt like entering another era. The scent of old wood, velvet, and history was intoxicating!
The performance that night was a dreamlike journey through the ballet classic, "Giselle". The dancers' skill, artistry, and pure passion was captivating. The swirling tutus of the corps de ballet were a vision, and watching the lead ballerina execute the final death scene brought a tear to my eye. Every move, every glance, every sigh seemed to capture the essence of true love, sacrifice, and tragedy. It truly was a once-in-a-lifetime experience!
A Fashion Spree: Finding Inspiration
The next day, I ventured out to explore Vienna's heart, and let’s just say my little fashionista heart skipped a beat! The shops here are like a sartorial wonderland - filled with stunning boutiques showcasing everything from vintage lace to avant-garde creations. I found myself in a beautiful little shop tucked away on a cobblestone street, filled with gorgeous vintage gowns, velvet coats, and delicate ballet slippers - perfect for inspiring my own wardrobe updates! A Whirl Through History:
One cannot explore Vienna without embracing its rich history. So, off I went to the Schönbrunn Palace – the breathtaking former summer residence of the Habsburg emperors and empresses. It was like stepping straight into a fairy tale! I just had to twirl amongst the exquisite gardens and gaze at the gilded chambers, each telling stories of centuries gone by. This place inspired a certain dramatic pose which I documented with some stunning photography!
Vienna Ballet:
You can't be a ballet-obsessed adventurer in Vienna without immersing yourself in its incredible ballet scene! Thankfully, a visit to the Vienna State Ballet was high on my list. After spending hours at the rehearsal studio, watching the dancers work tirelessly and effortlessly, I can truly appreciate the artistry and commitment it takes to bring these incredible stories to life.
The Beauty of Tradition:
Vienna has a way of charming you with its old-world traditions and exquisite art. I spent an afternoon exploring the Belvedere Palace – the home to Gustav Klimt's iconic “The Kiss.” This painting, with its vibrant colours and romantic theme, had me mesmerised. And the whole palace was a masterpiece of beauty and artistry – a perfect testament to the spirit of Vienna.
Horses and Dance:
I wouldn't be true to my adventurer's heart if I didn't embrace the joys of exploring Vienna on horseback. As I rode through the heart of the city, I couldn't help but imagine the days of waltzing through the grand squares, with a sense of elegant adventure that only horseback riding can bring. The combination of elegance and grace, reminiscent of ballet, was perfect for a tutu-clad day out!
Embracing the Vienna Ballet Culture:
Vienna is a city that pulsates with ballet. Everywhere you go, there's a hint of grace, elegance, and artistic beauty. Even the street performers have a certain poise and elegance about them, their dancing inspired by Vienna's ballet legacy. Every moment here is a ballet, from the graceful glide of the trams through the cobblestone streets to the passionate melodies of Viennese waltzes echoing through the air.
Pink Tutus and Viennese Delights:
While I'm known for my vibrant pink tutus, this trip had a whole new shade of inspiration – I'm talking about Vienna's delicious treats! Sachertorte, strudels, and every kind of pastry imaginable had my tastebuds singing! It was the perfect mix of deliciousness and decadence – fitting right in with the luxurious, artistic essence of Vienna.
