Vienna, Waltz Me Away: Tutu-ing Around Austria! 🩰🇦🇹

Post Number 1476 - Wednesday, 16th August 2023

Hello darlings, and welcome back to Pink Tutu Vienna!

The sun is shining, the cobblestones are glistening, and I'm positively giddy with excitement. This week, Vienna is brimming with the most magical ballet atmosphere! I'm feeling so inspired by the city's incredible history, vibrant energy, and of course, the endless supply of beautiful tutus, all waiting for me to try on!

Before I dive into my latest Viennese adventures, let me tell you all about how I got here.

It was a long, luxurious journey on a gloriously grand train, complete with plush seats, fine china, and a gentle sway that made me feel like a princess from a fairytale! I was dressed, naturally, in my most fabulous pink tutu, sparkling with sequins and feathers. The other passengers smiled and gave me admiring glances, even the stoic German gentleman in the corner cracked a grin when he saw me twirling in the aisle (it's not every day you see a tutu in the first class carriage, I can tell you that much).

The scenery whizzing past my window was incredible – rolling hills, sprawling meadows, and fairytale castles peeking out from behind the trees. I felt completely transported into a romantic painting. Honestly, this was the best way to arrive in Vienna – like arriving in a dream!

Now, onto my adventures! My first order of business: the famous Vienna State Opera House. The grand facade, with its statuesque columns and swirling flourishes, looked just like something out of a romantic film. Inside, the air buzzed with excitement – ladies in elegant dresses, gentlemen in sharp suits, everyone was in their finery! The Opera House itself was stunning, with opulent gold and red decor, intricate carvings, and velvet seats that sank you into luxury.

But my heart truly fluttered when I saw the stage. I imagined the incredible ballerinas, their costumes shimmering under the spotlights, their movements so graceful and powerful… It truly filled me with wonder. The show was even more enchanting in person. The dancers moved with such elegance and precision, their stories woven into the music through their expressions and gestures. I sat there, spellbound, until the final note echoed through the majestic hall.

Tutu Talk: From Dance Halls to Debutante Balls

Vienna is a treasure trove of historical fashion and dance. Just as I was captivated by the costumes worn by the opera dancers, I had to delve into the historical context of Vienna's ballet. Turns out, tutus have a rich history of their own! They were a big hit with European royal courts and quickly became synonymous with high-class dancing. In the early days, these tutus were more elaborate, featuring hoops and layers upon layers of delicate fabric – think Marie Antoinette, all ruffles and frills!

As ballet became more technical, tutus became more practical. Today, we see both the classic "Romantic Tutu", with its soft, multi-layered tulle skirt, and the "Classical Tutu", known for its sturdy, pointed bodice and stiff, fitted skirt that gives the ballerinas a flowing, almost weightless movement. I love the way each different style evokes a different feeling – a timeless elegance and grace.

Now, Vienna isn't just about elegant, historical dance. This city embraces all forms of dance – and what’s even better is that many performances feature… pink tutus!

Dance Party at Schönbrunn Palace: Tutus in the Imperial Garden

Yes, you read that right! I got to watch a live street dance performance in the heart of Schönbrunn Palace! I felt like I was waltzing right into a fairytale! The backdrop of the beautiful Baroque palace, combined with the colourful dancers and vibrant music created a scene that felt truly magical. The group I saw featured dancers of all ages and styles – there was breakdancing, hip-hop, modern, even a touch of ballroom – all performed in bold, eye-catching colours.

But it was the group of ballerinas who truly stole my heart. Dressed in powder-pink tutus that swirled and fluttered as they moved, they danced among the flowers in the beautiful palace garden. Their passion was contagious, their every step felt effortless. It made me realise: tutus aren't just for the stage, they're for any time, any place!

My Pink Tutu Paradise: The Schönbrunn Zoo

What's a trip to Vienna without a visit to the famous Schönbrunn Zoo? But not just for any reason… this week, it's playing host to a spectacular tutu fashion show! That's right – all in the name of promoting joy, whimsy, and of course, the iconic pink tutu! It was like watching a whirlwind of colour and creativity - from classic tutus adorned with delicate flowers to bold statement tutus with feathers and sequins galore. It was a delightful showcase of the tutu's adaptability, proving they truly belong everywhere, even among the pandas and penguins!

The Shopping Scene: A Pink-Filled Dream!

Vienna is a haven for lovers of fashion. Every boutique, every shop window is brimming with beauty. From high-end department stores filled with shimmering gowns to quirky, independent stores with hand-crafted clothing, I'm absolutely smitten with the creativity here. I can't resist buying a new tutu or two (or three!)… they're so vibrant, so fun, so unique. I also found the perfect hat for my ballet performances – a gorgeous, wide-brimmed, floral creation in shades of rose pink, with delicate pink feathers. It's truly the finishing touch for my tutu-wearing ensemble.

Dress for the Dance!

Every day in Vienna feels like a stage, and it's exciting to be part of the show. So, put on your most sparkly tutu, your brightest smile, and dance to your heart's content!

Vienna, I love you! I love your grand buildings, your delicious pastries, your passion for art and music, and of course, your boundless enthusiasm for pink tutus!

Until next Wednesday, darlings!

Love, Emma xx
