Dearest Tutu-Lovers,
Hello from Vienna, the City of Dreams, the City of Music, and yes, the City of Pink Tutus! It's Wednesday, 12th January 2028, and I'm feeling oh-so-very much at home in this enchanting place, my pink tutu twirling like a ribbon in the brisk winter breeze.
This week, I'm feeling all kinds of nostalgic. It's been nearly a year since I last visited Vienna, and I have to say, the city has truly captured my heart. From the grandeur of the Hofburg Palace to the charming coffee houses nestled amongst cobblestone streets, Vienna is a feast for the senses, and the ballet scene here is simply divine.
I must confess, this week I indulged my inner shopaholic. My tutu collection has had a major update! The selection in the Vienna department stores is truly heavenly – a sea of satin and silk just begging to be twirled in. And while I nabbed a couple of brand-new tutus, let's be honest, I can never resist a vintage piece, and a charming little shop in the 7th district yielded a gorgeous, hand-beaded tutu that has already graced the stage here in Vienna, back in the 1920s! I'm so thrilled to give it a new lease of life, and I just know it'll add a dash of old-world elegance to my repertoire.
Of course, no visit to Vienna is complete without experiencing the city's famed ballet companies. This weekend I was utterly transported by a performance of Swan Lake at the Vienna State Opera. The costumes, the choreography, the sheer skill of the dancers, it was simply magical! And don't even get me started on the costumes. Each tutu was a work of art in itself, a symphony of tulle and feathers, making me even more determined to embrace the art of the pink tutu everywhere I go!
Speaking of which, did you know the history of the tutu itself is practically as old as the waltz? Imagine, our lovely tutus, a symbol of femininity and grace, have been captivating audiences for centuries. From the first rudimentary skirts worn by ballet dancers in the 1700s to the iconic tutus we see on stage today, the evolution of this beautiful garment has mirrored the changing times and tastes of fashion.
And speaking of change, my dear tutu-loving friends, my very own journey of self-discovery started right here in Vienna. You see, back in 2017, I arrived here in a pink tutu and a duffel bag full of dreams. I wasn’t sure what the future held for this small-town Derbyshire girl, but I was certain that a pink tutu could take me anywhere.
Today, I can happily say my travels have taken me across the globe, dancing in countless ballet shows, inspiring audiences young and old. And my travels all started with a vision of sharing the joy and freedom that comes from twirling in a pink tutu.
I've learned so much from the dancers, choreographers, and ballet enthusiasts I've met on my journey. I've embraced the stories behind the costumes, the history woven into every stitch. I’ve danced with professional dancers, local amateurs, and everyone in between. Every tutu story is unique, each a thread in the grand tapestry of our dance.
It's so rewarding to share this passion, to spread the joy of dance and inspire others to embrace the elegance and whimsicality of a pink tutu. I believe every one of us has the potential to twirl with grace and confidence, no matter what our age, size, or background. So, put on your pinkest tutu, my friends, and dance your heart out!
This week, my tutu travels take me to the city of Salzburg, where I'm set to explore the Sound of Music’s magic and discover more incredible vintage tutu treasures.
