Dearest readers,
Hello from Vienna! It’s a bright, sunny Wednesday here in the City of Music, and the air hums with a gentle, springtime melody. The birds are singing, the blossoms are bursting open, and… oh my goodness, have you ever seen such a stunning floral display on the façade of the State Opera House? I swear, I could smell the roses from across the street! This city truly is a dream, a swirl of elegance and beauty, and it's only just getting started for this Pink Tutu wanderer.
It feels like I've been saying this every week, but Vienna really does seem to have been built for tutus! There's something about the grand architecture, the imperial charm, and the swirling waltzes of the waltz kings that just scream, “Wear pink! And twirl!”
This week, I wanted to delve deeper into the city's musical heritage and pay a little tribute to Strauss the younger, the king of waltzes and the undisputed genius behind "The Blue Danube". His melodies still resonate in Vienna's cafes, theatres, and even on the wind!
Of course, no trip to Vienna would be complete without a trip to the Vienna State Opera, which, I'm happy to report, is truly breathtaking. Every inch of this architectural masterpiece exudes grandeur, from the sparkling chandelier hanging above the opulent auditorium to the plush red velvet seats. I sat enthralled by “The Magic Flute” which is playing on this very date, March 8th, a magical mix of drama, comedy, and of course, music.
Oh, my darlings, I do so love the spectacle of opera. It’s so vibrant, theatrical, and wonderfully expressive. Every note, every gesture, is a celebration of human emotions. The performance tonight was truly magical; the costumes, the sets, the dancing! I have a little confession to make; my eyes might have welled up with tears during the second act… such emotional depth, such raw beauty. You know how much I adore ballet, and I honestly think opera comes a very close second!
However, a ballet girl’s got to eat! Vienna’s cafes are a sight to behold, each more beautiful and elaborate than the next. The delicate china, the delicate pastries, the exquisite coffee…. sigh. It's enough to make a ballerina swoon! I couldn’t resist the opportunity to indulge in a delicious slice of Sacher torte while sipping on a frothy, aromatic cappuccino, all the while listening to a lilting Viennese waltz played by a string quartet. Ah, the perfect afternoon in Vienna!
But the day didn't end there. I knew my adventure had to include a horse-drawn carriage ride through the heart of the city! After all, one can't experience Vienna without feeling the rhythm of history under your hooves, right? I imagined myself as one of the ladies of the Imperial court, swept up in a romantic, dreamy journey through the city. The carriage ride took me through the Hofburg Palace, the Volksgarten, and finally to the iconic Vienna Ring Road. Oh, Vienna, you're a true treasure!
I did a little souvenir shopping, of course, finding a beautiful hand-painted ceramic plate with the city's landmarks and a delicate porcelain teacup with a delicate floral pattern.
And wouldn’t you believe it, even in the heart of Vienna, I found the perfect pink tutu shop tucked away in a charming side street! It’s called “Pink Petals” and it’s a treasure trove of pink loveliness. I managed to resist temptation and didn't buy any new tutus this week (much to my credit, I must say), but oh, how my heart skipped a beat when I saw those fabulous frilly, flowy, and pink tutus! They would have been the perfect complement to the vintage pink dress I bought this week! (The shops in Vienna are heavenly!).
One thing that I haven't told you about is my new found love for "tutu history!" Oh, how I’ve been loving reading about the origins of tutus and learning how this magical garment evolved over time! It’s so fascinating to learn how something that began as a simple, functional garment became such an iconic symbol of dance, ballet and femininity. And how could you possibly resist a tutu, anyway? They’re such a perfect mix of femininity, style and playfulness!
Vienna has really surprised me, my dears. It's not just a city of waltzes and music, but a city steeped in culture, history, and an endless supply of inspiration for this Pink Tutu wanderer. And, you'll be delighted to hear that *on Friday, 10th of March, Vienna will be hosting a “Pink Tutu Parade” through the historic streets. * Just imagine, hundreds of pink tutus twirling through the city! What an image! If you are reading this in Vienna, I do hope you will join the parade. A little reminder, a touch of whimsy, a celebration of all things feminine, a way to break the winter doldrums, why, that is what I call fun!
My dearest readers, I hope you're having a wonderful week, too. And remember, wear a pink tutu! It will be sure to put a spring in your step. Until next time!
Yours truly, Emma www.pink-tutu.com
