Oh, my darlings, hello from Vienna! I am absolutely thrilled to be back in this glorious city, a city that truly makes my tutu twirl with delight! This week's adventures have been simply divine - a mix of fairytale charm, stunning architecture, and oh, those gorgeous ballet performances! I must admit, there's nothing like watching the elegance and grace of a waltz performed in the Vienna State Opera, a breathtaking blend of artistry and historical significance.
But let's rewind a little, shall we? My journey to Vienna began, as always, with a delightful train ride. There’s something so enchanting about watching the countryside blur by, the world a watercolour painting outside the window. My fellow travellers even had a giggle when I slipped into my bright pink tutu for the journey. You know me, my loves - never shy about making a grand entrance!
Vienna, like a delicate ballerina in a shimmering pink tutu, is a city that captivates from the very moment you arrive. Cobblestone streets whisper secrets, cafes spill out onto sun-drenched squares, and the scent of Sachertorte fills the air, a sweet reminder of Vienna's exquisite charm. The whole city feels like a beautiful set for a fairytale – no wonder Mozart found so much inspiration here!
Now, my lovely readers, if you haven't already realised, my love for tutus is nothing short of an obsession! And what better place to indulge this passion than in the heart of Europe's ballet world? On my first day in Vienna, I visited the Wiener Staatsballet's costume workshop. I'm not going to lie, the place was like a dream come true! So much exquisite craftsmanship and creativity! The sheer amount of detail in each tutu - the layering, the tulle, the sparkle... it was almost enough to make my head spin! The artisans were so welcoming, explaining the history behind their incredible creations. I found out that the Viennese tutus, especially those from the Golden Era of ballet, are renowned for their elaborate design, combining sumptuous fabrics, rich ornamentation and a touch of classic romanticism that always reminds me of my own beloved Derbyshire countryside.
I can't tell you how much I was enthralled, especially with the historical garments. Imagine my excitement when I was given a sneak peek at the original costumes for the legendary "Giselle," one of my absolute favourite ballets. I even dared to try one on - feeling like a princess stepping out of a fairytale. Of course, my dear readers, I made sure to snap some photographs for your enjoyment, (and maybe a few selfies, because why not?).
That evening, I was blessed with the opportunity to see "Swan Lake" performed at the Staatsoper. Oh, what a magical evening! I mean, there's just something about seeing swans transforming from ethereal, graceful creatures to feisty and vengeful birds! Such artistry and emotion, you could feel it in every pirouette, every jump, every look exchanged between the dancers. There was so much beauty on stage, it just made me feel alive and joyous! I was dancing in my seat - almost literally - before finally surrendering to the spell of the performance and getting caught up in the beauty of the movements and the power of the story.
My ballet dreams are so alive in this city! Even if I had only experienced the ballet side of Vienna, this trip would already be a dream come true. But the adventures, dear readers, haven’t stopped there! Today, for instance, I've taken a delightful ride through the heart of the city, the sound of the horses’ hooves echoing through the streets as I savoured every breathtaking sight – St. Stephen's Cathedral soaring majestically, the Hofburg Palace with its glorious grandeur, and of course, the Vienna State Opera – a glittering temple to the art of dance. And all of it with the crisp autumn air on my face and the vibrant colors of Vienna autumn bursting from the trees!
Speaking of trees, I absolutely had to pay a visit to Schönbrunn Palace today. This royal gem, a little palace for my royal ballerina heart, has truly stolen my heart. There's a breathtaking view over the city, the grand palace rooms are truly spectacular, and those manicured gardens, full of colour and serenity – I could spend hours wandering through them, imagining Empress Elisabeth twirling in her royal gown.
But of course, dear readers, no trip to Vienna would be complete without a spot of shopping, would it? Now, this isn't just about buying trinkets, no no! For me, it’s about discovering treasures and finding that perfect pink tutu (though I must confess, this is often a harder task than one might imagine, even in the beautiful boutique filled with couture in Vienna)!
Luckily, I found some wonderful things today! You’ll just have to wait to see them in my next post, But I can say this – a vibrant fuchsia satin scarf and a pair of vintage ballet pumps with the most adorable pink bows found their way into my bag! And, I might have been tempted by some delightful little pieces at a second-hand shop where I found a pair of ballet shoes for just a few euros. I had to take a chance! You never know, they could be destined to make a comeback with some stylish upcycling!
One of my absolute favourite places to shop in Vienna is a lovely little vintage store called "Die Mode Diva". Tucked away in a hidden corner of the city, this little shop has an irresistible air of old-world elegance, the kind that always whispers “Pink Tutu Adventures” in my ears. And oh, my loves, it has the most divine collection of hats, gloves and accessories you could possibly imagine. I bought myself a glorious emerald green velvet hat that felt like something straight out of a “Vienna 1920’s" movie. Of course, my tutu dreams took over and I had to purchase a tiny pink feather boa – the perfect accessory for the perfect ballerina!
It's amazing how even a seemingly simple walk down the street in Vienna can be an adventure, filled with unexpected surprises. Yesterday, I stumbled across a tiny little ballet shoe repair shop. I popped in, mesmerised by the worn wooden floor, the smell of leather, and the tools of the trade - tools for bringing those elegant dancing shoes back to life! You’d think that, in this modern age, ballet shoes would come off the shelf in perfect condition. But it's lovely to find little places where things are made with care and with time, in this ever-changing, fast-paced world. I think a good ballerina, like a good shoemaker, is someone who works on the details, you know? They know how to find the perfection, not only in the large movements, but also the tiny things, the tiny steps that make a big difference.
Speaking of details, I'm truly excited about my ballet plans for next week - another exciting evening at the State Opera awaits! The program looks absolutely stunning! They're performing "The Sleeping Beauty," and I know it's going to be pure magic!
The beautiful, vibrant city of Vienna is always on my mind – a reminder that my life is an endless adventure in pink tulle! And oh, by the way, darlings - don’t forget to spread the pink tutu love! Whether you’re at a theatre, or out enjoying the streets of your city, don't hesitate to twirl!
See you next Wednesday for more #PinkTutuVienna Adventures, Emma xxx
