Pink-Tutu.com Post #116: A Trip Back in Time to the Glorious Year of 1688!

Hello my gorgeous darlings, and welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com! Today, we’re embarking on a rather special journey - back to the year 1688, a year that was truly pivotal for the world of ballet. I absolutely love exploring history, and when it comes to dance history? Oh, honey, that’s my jam!

It was during this remarkable year that the Royal Academy of Dancing was established right here in our dear England, at the heart of King's Theatre in Drury Lane. Think of it: this was the official birthplace of our beloved British ballet! Just imagine, tutus twirling at a place that would become world famous - I mean, just think of all the legendary performances and the iconic steps first graced by these hallowed stages! The excitement gives me chills!

The year 1688 saw another major breakthrough: The arrival of the very first professional female dancers in England. Talk about a momentous occasion! This moment changed everything! The thought of those courageous pioneers performing in front of a royal court, in their delicate finery... Just imagine, my loves, the elegance, the beauty, and the history being made in that very room! It’s such an honour to walk in the footsteps of these trailblazers. They were the originals, paving the way for generations of dancers, for all of us!

The 17th Century in ballet fashion was absolutely enchanting, darling. While it wouldn't be fair to call it tutus quite yet, the gowns were simply breath-taking! Think intricate details, shimmering silks, and the most romantic flourishes imaginable. I mean, we’re talking exquisite embroidery and elaborate designs – just the way I like my ballet fashion! It’s a classic yet timeless aesthetic – so very inspired, wouldn't you say? And can we talk about the shoes, my love? They had these tiny heels, barely lifting their dainty steps. Simply breathtaking!

In fact, this era in ballet history was bursting with colour and theatricality! They used everything from beautiful satin to vibrant brocades, making each and every movement absolutely breathtaking. We need to take a page from that glorious playbook, ladies, and bring the extravagance and panache back into our modern ballet fashion! Imagine all the gorgeous patterns we could create in tulle and the fabulous shoes we could be dancing in... A dream, darling!

Of course, in this vibrant year of 1688, there was far more to ballet than just the elegant gowns and shimmering costumes, though those are definitely my absolute favourite parts! This year also saw a groundbreaking shift in choreographic techniques. Imagine, my darlings, all these talented ballerinas and their choreographers collaborating to bring innovative routines and dramatic storytelling to life right before the royal court! I mean, the energy would have been electrifying, the emotions captivating. Talk about pure performance art, just waiting to unfold.

This year truly was a time of momentous change in the world of ballet! But it wasn’t just about dancing and fashion!

I always find it absolutely fascinating to travel through time and see how life was lived then. In 1688, England saw the Glorious Revolution, where the Catholic King James II was overthrown by his own Protestant daughter, Mary, and her husband, the Protestant Dutch king, William III! Just think about the incredible energy of change and rebellion! So much energy that it could have literally sparked a movement, like a wave of excitement throughout the kingdom - maybe that was what fuelled the passion in their ballet as well.

You know, my lovelies, I find myself longing for those times sometimes! To dance amongst such historic, exciting times - but what's important is that we remember this amazing historical heritage in our present day ballet!

Speaking of the present day, you absolutely can't miss a stunning performance at the Royal Ballet, the ballet that arose from that very same academy back in 1688, this very week! Imagine a full circle experience. Just a stone’s throw away in London. And let's talk about fashion - I know some amazing designers here in Derbyshire are creating utterly inspiring modern versions of the beautiful fabrics and designs from those 1688 performances. Just wait till you see them on my Instagram – you'll swoon, I promise. I absolutely adore their attention to detail, the incredible artistry of the designs – almost like a historical tapestry of dance coming to life.

We are standing on the shoulders of the incredible giants who came before, darling! So next time you put on your pink tutu, you can embrace it even more wholeheartedly. It is more than just a lovely colour, more than a fluffy skirt - it is a legacy! A story. And let’s not forget how vital the support of these patrons was! To those who are so dedicated and passionate that they actually funded these revolutionary leaps in ballet history! Their influence can be seen even today, and is woven into the very fabric of our favourite performances! They make these beautiful moments in ballet history happen. Just like those dancers back in the day, we too, must support our talented choreographers and dancers and ensure they get the recognition they deserve, the platforms they need to shine, and the opportunities to showcase their passion!

I can't wait to see you at our next event! Don't forget to visit Pink-Tutu.com regularly for my latest blog posts, photos, and ballet insights! And please do let me know, darling, which historical periods are your favourite.

Until then, remember – life is short, dance often and dance with love, especially if it's in a pink tutu!
