Pink Tutu News #148: Dancing Through the Decades: 1720 – A Year of Elegance & Enchantment!
Oh darling, can you believe we’re back with another glorious chapter in our Ballet History tour?! It’s been such a whirl, and I can’t wait to share another year of dance and all things beautiful. This time, we’re twirling back to 1720, and trust me, darlings, it's a real treat! This era was an explosion of colour, grace, and the very beginning of ballet’s ascent into its full-blown glory. Think dramatic silks, intricate steps, and an air of sheer elegance. Let’s go, lovelies! Time to transport ourselves right into the heart of the dance!
The Art of Courtly Charm: Picture this, darlings, a grand ballroom at Versailles, the centrepiece of a majestic court. That’s where ballet was thriving in 1720! Kings and queens were captivated by the grace and precision of dancers. But unlike today, there were no fancy academies or rigid steps, It was all about spectacle! Imagine huge productions with stories told through dance and elaborate costumes - it must have been breathtaking!
Paris - The Dance Mecca: Back in our time, darling, the stage was ablaze with innovative ideas and even some slightly naughty ballets, if you can believe it! Remember, the French Court was famed for its artistic flair, and the Parisians loved a good bit of theatrics.
Meet the Dancing Masters: But wait! There's more to ballet than just swirling around! This was a time when dance teachers, the masters of the art, took centre stage. Imagine figures like Louis Dupré - oh my! These guys weren't just about twirls and jumps; they brought the world of music and art together, developing the moves and style we know and adore today. They were true pioneers of ballet!
Beyond the Royal Ballroom: While royalty ruled the courts, ballet was taking on new forms. Fancy theatrical balls, where everyone danced like it was the last night on earth, started cropping up. Then there were the 'Comédie-Ballet,' an exciting blend of ballet, music, and even drama – think musical theatre before musical theatre was a thing!
Dress to Impress!: Of course, when talking 1720, darlings, how could we miss the fashions?! These costumes, oh my, were simply stunning. Elaborate gowns with layers and layers of silk and satin, with shimmering embellishments – pure luxury. Imagine them swirling and dipping on the stage, and then think about how much dancing was needed to move all that gorgeousness - pure art!
A Peek at 1720 Stage Fashion: Imagine satin slippers that were, well, just that – slippers with satin bows, so cute! The dancing masters made those beautiful movements possible. Those slippers were a world away from the pointe shoes we know today!
Let’s go to the Shows!
As always, darlings, let’s see what the dance world is showing off! In Paris, the famous Opéra de Paris - so fabulous, wouldn’t you agree? - was dazzling with grand spectacles that drew crowds. Just think, darlings, watching a "ballet d’action," which combined incredible music, breathtaking costumes, and elaborate sets!
Our 1720 Inspiration!
And guess what, darlings, we're getting serious vintage vibes here! This era was so all about grace, finesse, and an emphasis on elegance. That makes me think of tutus with more elaborate designs, maybe with longer tutus, beautiful pleating, and just that extra hint of 'grand.' I’m already scheming how I can pull it all off with a bit of pink - oh the possibilities, darlings!

Our Ballet-Shopping Adventures!*
Now I have to find some fabric, darlings! I'm just itching to create some tutus inspired by 1720 fashion. A blend of silk, layers, maybe even some vintage brocade! Don’t you love finding vintage inspiration, lovelies?
Time for Some Street Style!
What would life be without some ballet outside of the theatres and fancy balls? Oh darlings, this is my favourite part. Imagine waltzing across a cobblestone street - wouldn’t that be sensational! So graceful, elegant and quite possibly slightly impractical but, oh, wouldn’t it be amazing? Imagine street musicians adding to the rhythm, or the odd, but very kind crowd clapping for you as you perform a delicate adagio - Pure ballet joy, darlings!
So there you have it, my lovely readers - 1720! Such an important chapter in our dance story. Who knows what exciting innovations 1721 will bring? See you next time, my dear loves! I can’t wait to travel through more years with you. Let’s all dance our way through history - and make the world pink!
Yours in Tutu, Emma!
