Pink-Tutu.com - Post #15: March 3rd, 1921 – Oh Darling, It’s Ballet Time! đŸ©°đŸ’–

Hello darlings! Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, where we’re always on a mission to bring a little bit of sparkle to every day! This month, my trusty pink tutu has taken me on another fabulous journey back in time, landing us in the roaring 20s! Buckle up, my lovelies, because it's all about flapper dresses, daring looks, and yes, even ballet!

This time around, we’re travelling to the 3rd of March 1921, just imagine all the history unfolding! It's a year that brought us iconic figures like Dame Edith Evans, the first woman to become a professor in English at a university, as well as the first major transatlantic airmail flight!

But wait
what's that sound? It’s a waltz in the air and a symphony of
 SWAN LAKE?!?

Yup, darling! I was just strolling along, mesmerized by a flock of flappers, their cloche hats bouncing and bobbing as they flitted about, when
bam! Right in front of me, a shimmering, extravagant spectacle began. This isn't just any show, this is THE London debut of Swan Lake - the ballet by composer Tchaikovsky.

My dears, can you believe it? The grandeur, the spectacle! It’s as if the stage itself came alive! I could just imagine how all the ladies in their feathered headbands and dazzling dresses must’ve felt. The whole world felt as if it was dancing with us!

It wasn't just the stunning performance, it was the absolute elegance of the ladies present – the beautiful dancers and even the ladies in the audience. My goodness! They all had their own personal take on fashion that took my breath away. They knew how to make an entrance! It's all about confidence, and let me tell you, they've got it in spades! The sheer artistry of it all
the way they were expressing themselves with each movement... it truly embodied the beauty of performing art!

But hold on to your feathers, because that’s not the only reason this time-trip was spectacular! You know I'm always on the hunt for that extra dose of fabulous, so of course, I popped into the most opulent theatre, The London Coliseum. Imagine, a breathtaking building brimming with theatrical life! And inside, the sheer drama! My darling, you know I love a good old-fashioned theatrical vibe.

But let’s rewind to before my dazzling London escapade
I made a pitstop back home in Derbyshire. My fellow Derbyshire folks, you know that we've always got a fantastic drag scene. This month was no exception, there was a truly fabulous show on in Chesterfield at a new venue – The Ballroom. Talk about finding those hidden gems, darling! It’s one of those little corners of the universe that explodes with incredible talent, just bursting at the seams!

I got my fabulous on in that sparkly little bar and witnessed some truly unique acts – everything from campy and theatrical to cutting-edge and political. Each show offered a different side of drag, and I just knew, this was going to be a truly unforgettable journey back in time, not just for the drag queens but for the audience too!

Back in London, the drag world was buzzing with something new... something wild and revolutionary. We saw the birth of The Century Club. This exclusive cabaret had more to it than your regular cabaret show, darling. This one was pushing boundaries with performances, creating an entire world of art that fused music, performance, and visual spectacle. Now that's a vibe I can truly appreciate! Think fabulous dancers in their finest plumage – yes! A space dedicated to self-expression – my goodness, can you even imagine! This kind of cabaret is the epitome of self-expression. It’s the type of space where artists could let their true selves shine and make an impact on society.

Speaking of impactful
Let’s dive into a fascinating trend that caught my eye in 1921. It was like this
I’m sitting in a cafĂ©, my mind bursting with excitement over The London Coliseum’s glamour
when all of a sudden – boom! The flappers around me start singing this beautiful little ditty about women and their place in society! My dears, it was the popular song “Yes! We Have No Bananas”

And while the lyrics on the surface are a tongue-in-cheek commentary about the lack of bananas, there was something deeper bubbling just beneath that surface. It's a kind of “girl-power” anthem, in a way, It’s about taking control of your life, standing up for yourself and yes, a call for change in how women are viewed in society!

And talking about girl power, did you know that March 8th is International Women’s Day?! You can't talk about a trip back to 1921 and NOT talk about the struggles and triumphs of women throughout history. These women, and many others, worked tirelessly, and I'm thrilled to celebrate them all. They've all contributed to who we are today, and that deserves a heartfelt, "Thank You!"

I'm ending my blog post with a special message – Don’t let your dreams just stay dreams, darling! Be bold, be audacious, be creative. Embrace your individuality. Live with flamboyance and with all your heart!

See you all next month with another incredible time-travelling adventure. Until then, keep dancing!

Yours in Pink,

Emma ✹💖
