Hey Sugarcubes! It’s your favourite Derbyshire drag queen blogger, Emma, back with another scintillating time travel tale. Get your teacups ready darlings, cause this month we're going back, back, back to… drumroll1921! 🤯

Yes, this pink-tutu-wearing babe is getting ready to sashay through the Roaring Twenties in style! I'm about to slip into my time-travelling tutu, and poof, I'll be back in time! (And yes, darling, you’re seeing a glimpse of that magic tutu right here!) 😉 This time, my little angels, I’m on the hunt for some seriously vintage drag vibes, because who wouldn’t want to witness the early days of our glorious art form?! 💖

Let’s grab our imaginary fan and settle in for this fabulous ride!

A Drag History Gem

It’s 04th April 1921, and oh honey, what a time to be alive! While this wasn't the official beginning of drag as we know it today (which some historians say began with the first recorded public appearance of a drag artist), the 1920s was truly a groundbreaking era for gender-bending performance. 💅

Imagine it, darlings: Flapper dresses, bob haircuts, the jazz age swirling around you. And at the centre of it all? The fearless, trailblazing queens who dared to express themselves beyond traditional norms. It was the perfect time for drag to flourish. 🤩

And what about those queens, you ask? Well, I'm on a mission to discover their names! Sadly, so many were lost to history, but we'll keep searching. That's why I'm here, after all!

A Drag Queen's Delight

Before we get any deeper into the exciting world of 1920s drag, let’s indulge in a little “me” time, shall we? This week, my blog has hit an exciting milestone - it's post number 16! To celebrate, darling, I’m absolutely spoiling myself rotten. You see, I have the privilege of getting to combine two of my favourite things in the world: travel AND drag. The performances I give really allow me to make the magic of my time travels possible. ✨

So this week, oh my, I’m absolutely rocking a vintage inspired drag act for all you fabulous supporters, full of tassels and fringe - a homage to those glorious 20s queens who helped build the foundation of what we enjoy today. 💃 And after, ooh darling, I’ll be off to explore all the glamour and excitement of 1920s London - a time of boundless energy and endless possibilities. What an era to experience! 🤩

Now back to our trip! What I'm about to experience in this specific historical moment will make for an extraordinary blog post, so let’s step right in, shall we?

An Enchanting Encounter: London’s Vaudeville & Beyond

Picture it, 1921 London. I’m strolling through the busy streets, awash in the sights, sounds, and oh so much, delicious fashion! What a delight for any lover of vintage glamour like me.

And guess what, darling? Vaudeville theatre was at its peak! The stages buzzed with captivating acts, some of them surely included drag artists pushing the boundaries, bringing laughter and dazzling performances to the masses. 🤩

Let's imagine a scene in a crowded London theatre, filled with the laughter and anticipation of the audience. It’s packed to the rafters. The spotlight shines on the stage, illuminating the glorious, sparkly sequins and dazzling feathered costumes. 🎭 A drag queen, with her bold makeup and a voice that melts hearts, sings and dances, charming the crowds with a twinkle in her eye.

Oh, I simply cannot help but get swept away by the infectious energy of this vibrant era. ✨ I’ve seen advertisements for the legendary London Palladium, with a whole night of variety shows! Just imagine, darlings! What a night of sparkling performances and laughter, not just at the theatre but right across London! ✨

Fashion Trends: 1920s Inspiration For Today

Let’s take a moment to marvel at the spectacular fashion of 1921, darlings. The fashion trends, they just were heavenly. Long, flowing dresses for the women, a bold mix of colors for both ladies and gents! ✨

Imagine me in my pink tutu, walking amongst the flapper girls, sipping cocktails, twirling with my fans and showing off some impressive drag queen moves! It would have been fabulous. Oh darling, don’t you just wish you could travel in time with me?! 😍

There was this particular trend called the “drop-waist” dress. This stylish dress showed off all those gorgeous curves. The fabric would have been a perfect background to show off my favourite sparkling jewels and feather boas! 🤩

Another absolute winner in my book: The “flapper dress,” this iconic outfit featured a shortened hemline, flaunting those stunning ankles. And honey, don't even get me started on the beaded accents and dazzling sequins of that time. I just live for a little shimmer, darling!

The ladies and gents in this period were definitely ahead of their time. Now tell me, darling, are you wearing a tutu? If you’re not, then honey, it's time to step into your own pink, puffy, fabulousness! And who knows, maybe you’ll be inspiring someone else to grab a tutu and dance like there’s no tomorrow! 🤩

Pink-Tutu Time Travels

Well darling, it’s almost time to pop back into my magic tutu. But first, oh sweetie, let’s discuss a few tidbits of drag-tastic news! This time travel, darling, really makes you see how far we have come and, most importantly, what an important impact the pioneers of drag have made on our modern scene. It makes me, and I’m sure many of you too, realise just how much there is to discover about drag’s extraordinary history. 🤩

It’s about so much more than glitz and glamour, darling. It's about artistry, activism, and empowerment. It's about pushing boundaries and redefining beauty. 🎭 And I am committed to honouring these powerful roots as I continue my journey as a drag queen time traveller!

Remember darlings, keep the fabulousness flowing. Keep spreading the joy of drag, the magic of glitter, and don’t forget, a pink tutu can be the key to a more joyful world!

And for next month, I promise, my lovelies, an adventure so fabulous you will be talking about it for days. 🤫 See you on the pink-tutu.com website soon, darlings. 💖 Until then, I'm sending you lots of love and lots of sparkle.

XOXO,

Emma. ✨
