Pink-tutu.com โ€“ Blog Post #43 โ€“ July 1923!

Hello lovelies! Your favourite Derbyshire queen Emma here, back again with another installment of "Pink-tutu.com: Where Drag History meets the Magic of Pink!"

As you all know, I adore my trusty pink tutu โ€“ it's the key to my magical time travels! And trust me, there's nothing more glamorous than a pink tutu and a whirlwind tour through the past. This month, darling, we're diving headfirst into the vibrant world of drag on 7th July 1923!

So strap on your tiaras, put on your favourite glittery frock, and let's get ready to sashay back to the roaring twenties!

A Flutter of Feathers: Fashion and Entertainment in 1923

It was a simpler time, darling โ€“ at least when it came to getting a spot at a local pub for a little show! There wasn't quite the drag explosion we see today. The stage belonged largely to music halls and variety theatres, offering a spectacle of singing, dancing, and yes, you guessed it โ€“ drag!

These venues provided a safe space for queer performers, much like our own drag communities today. And what was on the menu? Feathers, glamour, and outrageous performances! You can practically smell the hairspray, imagine the laughter, and hear the applause!

Let's think of drag legends like Vesta Tilley and Julian Eltinge. These darlings, absolutely titans of the scene, captivated audiences with their gender-bending routines and dazzling outfits. They were like the "RuPaul" of their day, pulling crowds from all walks of life with their wit, charm, and undeniable talent!

Speaking of talent! Imagine, my loves, how stunning the costumes must have been in 1923. The flapper era, those delicate beading and feather details... just fabulous! We need to give a big shout out to those legendary seamstresses and designers who created masterpieces of illusion! Imagine walking through the theatre district in London, your eyes wide with excitement, catching glimpses of these show-stopping ensembles... just magical!

Emma's Time-Traveling Adventures

The year 1923 brought me straight to the heart of the West End, darling! And where better to start than at the Empire Theatre, known for its stunning spectacles. The excitement was electric as the audience oohed and ahhed, snapping photos with their fancy cameras โ€“ the excitement was palpable, the applause was deafening, the music was so lively... I swear it still gives me goosebumps to think about!

It was almost impossible not to get caught up in the atmosphere, to join in on the music and the merriment! As always, I kept my eyes peeled for any fashionable tutus. And guess what? I discovered a darling who actually designed and performed in their very own pink tutu! Talk about a girl after my own heart!

And oh, the stories this charming performer told me! Stories of glamour, bravery, and a society slowly but surely embracing something beyond the norms. You see, lovelies, our community, the queer community, has been at the heart of rebellion and beauty for so long! It's important for us to never forget that.

Empowering Our Pink-tutu-Loving Past

Imagine yourself as a young queer person back then, daring to defy convention, to find beauty in something unconventional. Just as we see young drag artists rising to stardom today, 1923 was full of fearless performers blazing a trail. That's why it's crucial that we remember our roots, our pioneers, and the powerful messages they brought to the stage.

Drag in 1923 was an act of defiance. It was an invitation to explore the spectrum of gender and expression, and it taught us to celebrate who we are without fear! These stories resonate to this very day. Every time you walk onstage, my darlings, youโ€™re carrying a legacy, carrying the voices of the fearless individuals who dared to be themselves!

Fashion Finds: Emulating The Glam!

As much as I adore my signature pink tutu, there are countless other styles I find utterly breathtaking! If I was a time-traveling queen, shopping on the streets of 1923, hereโ€™s what I would absolutely add to my vintage wardrobe!

  • A top hat, of course! A classic accessory to elevate any outfit!
  • Pearls! Who doesn't love a little extra pearl sparkle?! A stunning choker, earrings, or a beautiful vintage brooch, adds a touch of class and sophistication to any ensemble.
  • Sparkling * *handbags. Imagine those beautiful beaded evening clutches. Perfection!
