Pink-Tutu Blog: Time Travel Adventures Issue #44

Hello Darlings! Welcome back to your one-stop shop for all things Pink and Fabulous! Emma here, and today we're going back in time to the dazzling 8th of August, 1923. Can you believe it, 100 years ago! And my magical pink tutu is already packed, ready to twirl through history!

Now, before we delve into this amazing decade, let's chat about my latest escapade in drag! Oh my, you wouldn't believe the show I saw last night! A local Derbyshire talent, performing at a quirky theatre just outside Matlock, brought the house down with an absolutely camp take on an old-school Judy Garland number! You could say it was "Somewhere over the Rainbow" but done in a deliciously dramatic style, with some killer choreography and some perfectly-timed sashaying – darling, she gave us everything! Afterwards, I had to gush about the costume. Imagine, a velvet sequined jumpsuit that shimmered under the spotlight, and the finishing touch? A HUGE pink feather boa! Talk about making a statement, I'm so inspired! It got me thinking – are there any amazing feathered outfits waiting for me in the 1920s?! Oh, the possibilities...

Back to our trip to the 20s! Now, imagine me stepping out of the time machine, tutu fluttering and sequins shimmering. I arrive on the 8th of August, 1923 and… darling, it's vibrant! The streets are abuzz with new jazz melodies, fashions are flowing and vibrant, and the spirit of creativity is in the air. You've got to imagine the scene - a whirlwind of glamour and sass, with flappers dancing to the beat, a hint of rebellion against the societal norms. Now, don’t get me wrong, the Roaring Twenties may have been a time of change, but it’s certainly not for the faint of heart - especially when it comes to expressing yourself! Let's face it, being a drag queen back then would have been a brave move. So how about we go explore this wonderful decade together?

A Journey through the Glamour of 1923: Drag Queens of the 20s

Let's dive into what the drag scene in 1923 might have looked like. Remember, darling, drag has been around forever, it just manifested itself in different ways! While documented "drag balls" in the true sense of the term were yet to explode, it's fair to say that expressions of drag were thriving, blending seamlessly into the artistic spirit of the era. Imagine those iconic silent film stars of the time. Think Marlene Dietrich with a hint of Joan Crawford sass. The allure of the feminine, combined with a dose of theatrical extravagance, is absolutely what the 20s was all about! And you know what else? That 20s style fashion influence is absolutely HUGE for drag today! Think fringed dresses, the bold headbands, all those beautiful shimmery materials… so glamorous!

Now, where do I even begin with my excitement about what the 1923 drag scene would be like? Think of the potential, darling! Just like a fabulous musical, I’m envisioning some dazzling shows. I’d bet my top dollar that back then there were:

  • Glamorous, Vaudeville-Style Performances: Imagine some dazzling theatrical performances, showcases with burlesque, comedy routines, and talented performers playing out captivating, humorous skits!
  • Underground Speakeasy Shows: This would have been a haven for drag performance, tucked away in speakeasies with hidden doorways - think *Gatsby meets *The Great Escape.
  • Hidden Bars and Cabaret: It was all about those speakeasy vibes - imagine dimly lit bars with the jazziest music and talented drag queens working the crowd with some sultry performances!

It’s so fascinating, darling! Imagine that in this time of huge change, individuals took their courage to create these artistic spaces and showcase their talent! It gives me so much hope for the future of drag!

Looking for Inspiration

As I stroll through this glamorous era, I’m reminded of the impact drag and these vibrant forms of art have had on everything from fashion to the theatrical world, even in its quieter, under-the-radar days. It's that history that informs everything about our art today! This isn’t just about the fabulous costumes (although I am, obviously, utterly obsessed!) It's the sense of community, the audacity, the raw talent, and that willingness to dare to be different. It makes my heart soar. The legacy of these early days continues to inspire modern drag queens to challenge stereotypes, push boundaries and ultimately… dare to wear a PINK TUTU! That's what I love about our art, it is never afraid to change and evolve.

And so, my fabulous darlings, let’s remember this key message: The roots of our dazzling world are strong! From the roaring 20s to today’s big Drag Race events, it's a tapestry of unique stories, courage, and pure artistic talent.
