Pink-Tutu.com - Post #53: A Pink Tutu in 1924!

Hello darlings, it's Emma here, and welcome to another fabulously pink edition of my time-traveling adventures! I'm absolutely tickled pink (sorry, not sorry!) to be back with a fresh new blog post, and trust me, this one is going to be a right hoot. Buckle up buttercups, we're heading back in time... to the roaring twenties!

This month, my pink-tutu-clad self was whisked away to the 5th of May, 1924. Imagine, 1924! The flapper dresses, the jazz, the daring short haircuts. Imagine the thrill of it all. Can you imagine if I tried to wear my sparkly pink tutu there? Oh, the scandal!

But you know me, I wouldn't let a little thing like scandal stop me from taking a peek at the world of drag back in the day! And lemme tell you, darling, things were different back then.

The thing is, "drag" in 1924 was still firmly under wraps, so to speak. There weren't flamboyant shows with full-on glitter and sequins that we take for granted today. Nope, this era saw more of a theatrical tradition, the kind where men would dress up in women's clothing as part of variety shows.

I have to tell you, my fellow drag enthusiasts, 1924's theatrical drag felt a lot less glittery than my usual taste. It was still incredibly brave, but a little less, shall we say, “show-stopping.” That doesn't mean they weren't impressive! Think of performers like Julian Eltinge. He was an American actor known for his dazzling cross-dressing performances on stage. Now THAT’s some history-making drag. Imagine! He became so well-known that people believed he was truly a woman!

Now, let’s dive into some fashion trends in 1924! Oh honey, think short bobs, dropped waists, and lots of sequins. Talk about a timeless look! My tutu wasn’t exactly on-trend, I'm afraid. It caused quite a stir among the folks who caught a glimpse of my time-travelling adventures. I was a bit of a rainbow amongst grey clouds of 1924, don't you think?

Let’s talk shopping! This is always my favorite part! Think department stores, glamorous silk lingerie, and an endless supply of beautiful flapper dresses with glittering sequins. Oh, it was a feast for my fashion-loving eyes, that's for sure!

One of the most exciting events of 1924 was the opening of the Palladium in London! This iconic venue was a hotspot for everything from variety shows and musical hall performances to, yes, you guessed it, drag! I popped in and got a real treat! The place was a vibrant hive of music and energy. Talk about a dream come true! The whole atmosphere was just buzzing. And wouldn't you know it? I spotted the most beautiful 1920s beaded dresses. I nearly died, darling!

There wasn't quite the same "scene" as we have today with fabulous clubs, underground scenes, and LGBTQ+ bars bursting with vibrant queerness. But what we do see is a seeding, a burgeoning understanding of self-expression that would soon explode into the drag we love today.

That was just a whirlwind of what I discovered in 1924! And who knows what wonders my pink tutu and I will uncover in future trips.

Now, darling, it's time for you to spread the love and the pink! Remember, it's not just about tutus and fashion, but the fierce self-expression that’s the backbone of this fabulous artform! Head over to www.pink-tutu.com for a whole world of pink-hued fun and don't forget to share your own drag adventures with me!

Until next month, stay fabulously pink!

With love and lots of sparkle,

Emma. xoxo
