Hello darlings! It's Emma here, your favourite time-traveling pink-tutu-clad drag queen, and let me tell you, June 1924 was simply divine. I literally got to meet Marlene Dietrich, darlings. Imagine - a proper Hollywood glamour girl, a legend in her own time - and here I was, shimmering in my pink tulle and getting her autograph on a napkin! The good news is that, this time, no one saw me in my magical time-traveling pink tutu. Thank goodness for those convenient blackout moments when I get spirited through the ages. Imagine having to explain a sparkly pink tutu to Marlene! (Well, we would all love to see it - right? I can make the magical tutu more visible for future posts, what do you say, darling readers?)
Now, about this magical journey. It was a whirlwind of flapper fashions, decadent shows, and a whole lot of fabulousness. I know, it's all a bit too much for a simple Derbyshire lass like me, but darling, this is Pink Tutu Time Travel! I had to see the world, especially the exciting bits!
The World is Your Stage:This month was buzzing with life and vibrancy. We're talking pre-Depression here, darlings, where things were flaming with glamour and decadence! It was all about dressing up, seeing the latest shows, and embracing a certain level of freedom that was really revolutionary at the time. Think roaring cars, boozy cocktail bars, and the Charleston – and remember this is all before we had Instagram and social media. Imagine it all live, on the street, at the theatre! What a dream!
Stepping Into The Spotlight:Imagine it - men in silk suits and women in sleek, short dresses, their movements loose, their attitudes bold, and their spirits sparkling like a diamond in the sun! This was the spirit of the Jazz Age. The age of excess - dancing all night, drinking champagne like it's going out of fashion, and pushing the boundaries of what was acceptable. It was also a time of real innovation for drag performers. You had drag shows taking centre stage at places like the famous New York City The Gaiety Theatre – not forgetting drag queens even putting on shows in places like London and Berlin, showcasing their unique talents. These were shows with heart, darling, filled with witty patter and even more daring routines - a blend of music, performance art, and theatre!
The Charleston CharmersNow, June 1924 is very much the age of The Charleston. A dance so full of energy, life and, shall I say, a certain kind of 'flirtatious ssik' - especially for a woman from Derbyshire! Think tassels and fringes flowing and all those amazing, fast-paced leg kicks. I’ve got to say, darling, it’s right up my alley! It was everywhere in 1924, so if you fancy channelling that flapper style this season - get out there, darlings, and Charleston yourself! *Remember – there is a time for *everything! And if I could go back, I would be out on that dance floor. It would be utterly divine!
### London in a Pink Tutu
And while I loved the bustling life in New York, there is something special about being in London, right? The energy, the history – it’s like a magical spell enchants the streets with such flair and sophistication. I took a little detour to London’s West End where the legendary drag performer Vesta Tilley was taking the stage, absolutely dazzling audiences with her masculine roles, sharp wit, and dazzling charm! I loved seeing the theatre lit up like a magical dream. Everyone had such glamour and class. That was a show for the ages, darling! Vesta was one of the most iconic drag queens of the day. She truly embodied a different kind of femininity, pushing boundaries and changing perceptions.
The Diva of Drag, Marlene Dietrich:Speaking of femininity, June 1924 took me to Berlin, the heart of it all. The most decadent, fascinating city I've ever encountered! I even got to see Marlene Dietrich on stage - the *ultimate woman, dressed to the nines. I had to watch her perform on a *secret mission, you know? I wanted to understand her style - those *masculine suits and a hint of something divine that just radiated sexy off of her. It was electrifying. Marlene was the woman everyone was talking about, from her film debut in “Tragedy of Love” to her on-stage performances, and for that unique and bold fashion sense she sported. It literally felt like revolution to me, all those times! Imagine – all that glamour, so liberated and bold – It is everything a pink-tutu loving queen could ever dream of.
*You *have to embrace a little bit of your own inner Marlene Dietrich. Trust me. There’s something powerful about owning that look, and expressing yourself with that daring charm. **
Looking Ahead: The Rise of Drag CultureThe more I journey through the years, the more I see the evolution of the art of drag. What we see today is truly a result of those early pioneers of drag, like Vesta Tilley and, yes, even Marlene. They made a way for the modern generation of drag queens. I know this, darling! That’s why my goal, my Pink Tutu Mission, is to empower everyone to embrace the magic of a pink tutu. There is a pink tutu for everyone. Don't worry - we can discuss that next month, darlings, when we get our ‘Pink Tutu’ makeover session on – don’t forget to be prepared, I might be choosing our first pink tutu makeover winner then!
A Fashionable Pink-Tutu Farewell!
