Hello, darlings! Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood pink tutu-wearing, time-traveling blogger, back with another installment of your favourite blog, Pink Tutu Travels. I'm coming to you live, live, from the glamorous, flapper-filled year of 1925! Oh, how I love the roaring twenties.
This month's trip has taken me to the fabulous, glittery heart of…wait for it… New York City! Oh, the excitement!
Let's be real, folks, the 20s are basically the grand-daddys of fabulousness. You’ve got your jazz, your flappers, your Charleston, your fabulousness…oh my! This is what dreams are made of. The energy here is electric. I could dance all day in my pink tutu – and honestly, that’s probably what I'm going to do! 😉
Backstage With the Harlem Renaissance Queens:
Now, you know how I love a bit of history, darlings! The Harlem Renaissance is literally blooming at this moment in time! And there’s no way I could come here without seeing what all the fuss is about! I've been lucky enough to spend some time with some absolutely sensational drag queens. (Not that I needed any more inspiration to wear pink tutus, but let me tell you, their looks are off the charts! So much fabulous feather-trimmed gowns and head-turning makeup, it's a drag queen's paradise.)
There are rumours circulating of drag balls in Harlem that have crowds flocking from all over the city. You see, in those days, drag shows were a little more…well, clandestine. And as much as I love my glamorous theatre performances in my hometown Derbyshire, I wouldn't want to miss out on seeing this raw, rebellious energy in full swing. These Harlem queens are living their best lives, expressing themselves with every glittering move and powerful performance. It’s true drag magic.
Time to Hit the Town!
Now, after my behind-the-scenes peep into the world of Harlem drag, I’m hitting the town. The air is thick with the sound of jazz and the scent of cheap perfume and good times! I’ve even spotted a couple of drag queens with bobbed hair and dropped waists performing their hearts out in the streets! You gotta admire their audacity, darlings.
Let me tell you, if there’s one thing they’ve got in spades, it's their charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent – everything a true queen should have. It’s easy to see how the Charleston is all the rage right now.
It’s truly inspiring to witness these performers, using their platforms to express themselves. Just as we are doing today. They've definitely reminded me why I am a fierce drag advocate, why I love sharing my time travel adventures, and why I am still, at this moment, absolutely devoted to the beautiful world of drag!
The Magic of Time Travel: Pink Tutu and All!
It’s times like these that I realise that time travel truly is a magic gift, darling. And this tutu is more than just an outfit. It’s a portal, a conduit, a fabulous beacon of history and performance art! The stories I hear from the past inspire me so much, reminding me of all the struggles and successes that have come before me and paved the way for today’s amazing drag scene.
So what is a pink tutu-wearing, time-traveling girl like myself to do when she gets a hankering for some more fabulous history? Of course! I'm hitting the record store to see what's happening with jazz. Imagine me in 1925, all in my pink tutu and little black dress, getting my own vinyl records. My own personal collection. Pure bliss.
It’s a drag queen's dream come true. The tunes and rhythms are incredible! Oh, it makes my heart sing. The jazz here has so much swagger and it makes you feel all empowered and ready to do a bit of Charleston yourself. (And let me tell you, my moves aren't half bad! Haha!)
Time for a little "Pink Tutu" Shopping Spree
This city has an endless selection of gorgeous boutiques that I’m desperate to explore. With their glamorous dresses, feathery hats, and glitzy shoes – you can tell that there’s something wildly creative going on. Even the flappers are into their feathers! I love that. Feathers and pink tutus are a match made in heaven! 😉
Now, for you sweethearts reading this, who live in this era, get yourselves down to Macy's! If you’re in town and are looking for the most glamorous outfits, look no further! The hats here are truly spectacular and everything is just so perfectly glitzy and glamorous! If you're feeling bold, you’ve gotta wear that bob with those fabulous hats. Flamboyant, darlings, flamboyant!
Now I’ve gotta go. I'm meeting with a bunch of lovely drag queens to catch a drag performance at The Palace Theater in New York. This performance has been lauded for its lavish costumes and incredible sets. Talk about drag history in the making.
I can’t wait to share more time travel adventures, darling! In the meantime, remember to stay fabulous, live your truth, and wear those pink tutus! 😉
Until next month, keep those tutus spinning and the sparkles flying!
Lots of love, Emma 💖
